Tom Brennan - Taylor Kohlwey is?

Photo of Taylor Kohlwey

Mets just signed 29 year old OF Taylor Kohlwey to a minor league deal.

The lefty hitter was a 21st rounder in 2016, and inc his last 4 minor league years, he is roughly .295/.390/.440. Not bad. K rate is good, too.

But just 2 for 13 as a major leaguer. Why?

Feels a lot like Taylor Kohlwey is a very similar player to former Mets prospect Jake Mangum, who was .298/.346/.425 in AAA for the Marlins in 2023, but never got a call up.

Perhaps Kohlwey is slightly better than Jake, but Steamers is not sold on him, projecting him to have just 14 MLB plate appearances in 2023.

A day closer are we Mets fans, I suppose - and hope, to some REAL, season-improving, signings. Not signings like this one, which improve minor league depth.

I really, truly wish baseball did not cut the former 40 man roster in September to 28. Guys like Kohlwey and Mangum would be much more likely to be called up if the cap was 32, and not 28.

So much work…so little reward.

  1. Tom,
It is reported that Ohtani signed with the Dodgers for 10 years, 700 million.
Ok, Mets time to start making your moves.

  2. Mets have to be regretting not extending Pete right now. The price for slugging free agents just spiked.

  4. yeah but we got Kohlwey. Now because no one saw 700 million we all knew it was going to be a BIG number so how surprising is it really and why didn't the FO deal with Pete last year? Mack what's the real story there.

  5. Gary, I wonder if the Mets would’ve extended Pete last year, if Sterns was the head guy at the time. His advice might’ve been completely different than whatever advice Cohen was getting.
