My Spin - Spring Training 2/16/24

The "pre-hit the field" gaggle made a stop in front of the locker of IF Jett Williams

Williams said he doesn't care what position the team wants him to play, which makes me think the team should move him to second base now

He also told the reporters that he had visited the campus of Tennessee when he was a junior high schooler and it was Drew Gilbert that hosted him.

Said he will do what it takes at any position to get to the majors the fastest.

Like most, I am very high on this kid and hope he plays major games this season in Syracuse.

The locker of Luisangel Acuña is located next to Francisco Lindor.  Trust me. This isn't a coincidence.

Sad news of the day is that the only contract 3B Eduardo Escobar could get was a MINOR league one from Toronto.

It seemed like he was a Mets mainstay only last week.

Ernest Dove reported that the already + slider that Tyler Stuart possesses has been "refined" during the off season. Wow.

I think we have a live one here.

Other thoughts on off-season activity by the Dove-mon are.... Boston Baro gained a bunch of muscle and is hitting the ball harder... coaches are very excited about Stuart's slider... Paul Gervase is improving his splitter and is doing heave work in the pitching lab... David Griffin is excited about hus sweeper... Joander Suarez looks solid... Mike Vasil is working hard with the lab, concentrating on his lower half and the overall plan is to maintain is velocity while improving his command.

Lots of cage action that included Jett Williams, Luisangel Acuña, Brandon Nimmo, Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, and Joey Wendle.

It was interesting to see Kodai Senga back with a bullpen session.  He's been very active so far this spring.  Other pitchers throwing bullpen sessions include Jose Quintana, Brooks Raley, and Jorge Lopez

A post-day gaggle talked to Jeff McNeil.

He said:

"I like what I see here. I still think expectations high and I think obviously the goal is to get back to the playoffs. Once you are in the playoffs, anything can happen.

Oh... he's been cleared for full activity.

Mgr. Mendoza announced at the end of cap that Williams would play SS and CF in camp while Acuña would play SS and 2B

  1. Gervase was great last year…and he’s adding a splitter? Look out.

    Rest of yesterday looks good.

Boston Baro? Like seeing he bulked up…now let’s see how he plays. Great name.

  2. Makes sense for Jett Williams to focus on SS and CF only this spring. I did read that he would get 2B time during the MILB season. First of all, CF is still very new to him, and being in big league camp for the first time AND learning and trying to impress at a new position (“whatever gets me to the bigs fastest”) seems like plenty to pile on the kid’s plate w/o having him worry about a second new position at the same time. It also seems clear that they don’t see Acuña as an OF, but is supposed to be a terrific SS/INF, and so Williams’ fastest path would seem to be out on the grass. I’d guess that Williams does get a bunch of 2B time during the season, and that he’s next in line there if Acuña fails to develop. The thought of Gilbert (5’9) Acuña (5’8) and Williams (5’7) as potential regulars down the road could be a (lack of) power issue. But at least Williams and Gilbert have flashed some pop, and having Pete (fingers crossed), a 25-30 HR SS, and a catcher capable of 40 bombs will help. Cannot wait to see the kids on the field this spring. Hope you’re doing well, Mack!

    1. The get to the big the fastest was a comment by Jett not a directorate from the Mets

    2. I don't share your concern about lack of height or power. I would love a team with 7 guys that all give you 20 home runs and.two with 40.

  3. Will we ever get to see a full report on the pitching lab?
How and when does it work, who gets to go (and for how long), when are the sessions, and who are the ins/uctors there?

    1. I don't think the Mets willnever produce a special show on SNY called The Lab

I'm sure the people accumulating the data have never played organized ball. These are data nerds and that's what you want.

I'm sure pitching coaches determinate who uses it and for what reason. Could be control issues, mechanics, or pitching angles.

    2. Good supposes. But why is it being kept as secret as nuclear bomb codes?

  4. Mack, glad you are well and happy birthday weekend to you! These reports are priceless for starved baseball fans. Of course, as spring brings optimism, all news is usually good but a Huge THANK YOU from us to Ernest Dove when you talk to him.
