My Spin - Spring Training 2/18/24

Clover Park was closed to the fans due to bad weather.

Because of this, I'm going to turn this into an OPEN THREAD with some questions to you regarding what path the Mets should take going forward.

You don't have to answer every question. Please just number your answers to what the nuber the uestion is you are answering to.

1. Should the Mets trade Pete Alonso NOW to maximize the return received back?

2. Should the Mets trade Pete at the all-star break if it looks like they will miss the playoffs?

3. Should they wait until after the season to deal with this issue?

4.  What do you think the proper path this season should be for Drew Gilbert ?

5. Same question regarding Jett Williams?

6.Same question Mike Vasil

  1. 1. Should the Mets trade Pete Alonso NOW to maximize the return received back?

Only at the All Star break, if Mets are out of it. Maybe Vientos shows by then that he is a viable, cheap replacement. Of course, it he does show that, the Mets will be in the WC chase, so then you would not trade Pete.

    2. Should the Mets trade Pete at the all-star break if it looks like they will miss the playoffs?

Only if they are too far out. Teams can suddenly get hot (2015, 2016)

    3. Should they wait until after the season to deal with this issue?

    Most likely, yes.

    4. What do you think the proper path this season should be for Drew Gilbert ?

3 months in AAA, then see if he is ready.

    5. Same question regarding Jett Williams?

One month in AA, 2 months in AAA. If ready consider call up.

    6.Same question Mike Vasil?

Vasil will depend on 1) if he is pitching well, and 2) if injuries necessitate a quick call up. Otherwise, stretch drive call up, if earned.

  2. Some juicy stuff here from David Stearns regards competition. The guy doesn’t hide…. But neither did Cohen at first….

  3. My take:

    1. Should the Mets trade Pete Alonso NOW to maximize the return received back?
I would listen, but unless I am blown away, the answer is no. At this point, it’s wait and see. One thing is for certain: “This unbound love for the Mets is bullshit to use Cohen the way Yamamoto did. You don’t change to Boras at the last minute because you want to stay put. Yes, It worked for Nimmo and Cohen overpaid, but Nimmo was much more honest about not knowing where he will end up. There wasn’t any theatrics or a show, and as Gary wrote yesterday, $1,000 for each homerun isn’t going to break him, but many players don’t give anything. So there’s that too.

    2. Should the Mets trade Pete at the all-star break if it looks like they will miss the playoffs?
No. Looking at what Goldschmidt who is a better player returned, again, only if you are blown away.

    3. Should they wait until after the season to deal with this issue?
    I guess.

    4. What do you think the proper path this season should be for Drew Gilbert ?
    September call up

    5. Same question regarding Jett Williams?
Do not put him on the 40 man roster this year.

    6.Same question Mike Vasil?
Bring him, Scott, Stuart and Hamel up after the deadline and let’s see what we got. In August, go all kid staff and whatever veteran is doing well.

  4. Let throw one more thing in regarding Alonso:

How can he not see the other free agents unsigned and not wonder. I’m sure he’s being told they have great offers, Boras just wants more - we all want more - but, I’m sure he’s monitoring. Stearns is smirking…. What was his line from that Foul Territory interview when they asked him if he keeps in touch with Boras? Something about, “Scott and I talk quite a bit”, after laughing and pointing to his cell phone?

Many fans act like the Mets need Alonso more than he needs them. I don’t see this.

  5. Me?

    1. Yes

    2. Moot point

    3. More moot

    4. Call-up at all-star break

    5. Finish year at AAA

    6. first injury callup

  6. Just play Baty and Vientos! Give them 150-200 ABs. Let them play through their slumps.

  7. 1. No
    2. Maybe.
    3. YES.
4, 5, 6. Start at AAA, evaluate in July.

  8. When trading Pete depends on return. When you get a insane offer tomorrow……

Gilbert should be up around the break. Trade Bader and $$ to get the best return.

Jet should finish in AAA and play only CF. Trade Marte and $$ next spring, move Gilbert to RF and play Jet in CF and he could become ROY in 2025

Pitching. Trade Severino, Quintana and Houser and $$. Call Butto, Peterson and Joey L for their last chance. They are out of options after this season. Stuart, Scott, Ziegler and Hamel should finish in AAA.

  9. I scheduled a Wed 11 AM article on another player, and it has something valuable to think about re: Alonso. Food for thought on the issue.

  10. DutchFan, I assume you want to trade Severino etc. after the season has progressed to the trade deadline. Not now.

I don't care about Jett as ROY - call him up when ready, and there is room for him to play. If that is in August, do it. He is a fiery player, on base machine base stealer with decent power. Don't hold him back.

  11. Before we speculate on callups, we must first answmer question about who is being replaced. Gilbert can replace Marte. Who would Jett replace, McNeill? Don't see Vasil in 2024 unless there are injuries

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ray, you could be right about Vasil. But keep three things in mind:

    1) 73 AAA innings already.

    2) he was dealing with a very variable strike zone all year. The entire International League had an ERA around 5.10 for that reason, a big jump from the prior year.

    3) He finished strong.

I think if the Mets had injuries where he was needed to start for the Mets in, say, June after 9-10 starts, he'd largely be ready.

I could, of course, be wrong.

    3)

  13. Tom, ofcource not before August

  14. I think we have a surplus of pitchers ready to step up when injuries occur from MeGill to Lucchesi to Peterson and Butto. A lot needs to happen before any minor league starters are called up.

  15. Why aren’t we mentioning Acuna? The Mets Player Director spoke hugely of him. I would not sleep on the kid.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Gus, just so happens, Acuna is in the bottom of my 7 AM article today. Met-Telepathy.

  17. A little late to this party but:

    (1) No, sign him now! Let's get this one out of the way.

    (2) See (1)

    (3) See (1)

    (4) Gilbert: Start at AAA. Assuming he is not tanking, he is the first outfield callup if/when Marte gets hurt OR if Gilbert is tearing up AAA and Stewart is not cutting it in NY by the all-star break, bring him up. If the MLB outfield stays healthy all year and Stewart is a productive #5 OF, that is Gilbert's bad luck. Next year is Gilbert's year to start in RF. (or CF)

    (5) Jett Williams: Start him in AA, then move him aggressively to Syracuse if his play is as expected in Binghamton. If he gets a couple hundred AAA at-bats, a Sept 2024 call-up would be warranted.

    (6) Mike Vasil: #1 Starter for Syracuse at the beginning of the year. With the depth of the rotation, Vasil is about #9 or 10 in the order at the MLB level. I think this is a results dictated decision.
