MACK - Draft Notes

MLB Pipeline @MLBPipeline

"I don't think that one has landed yet!" JJ Wetherholt, the No. 8 2024 Draft prospect, hits a no-doubt home run

Burke Granger @burkegranger

JJ Wetherholt (SS/2B, WVU Baseball) got all of this one and he knew it. Announced at 460 feet. Hope you admire it as much as he did

(I currently have him in the 1.10-12 range)

Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

Florida State OF James Tibbs III has been a wrecking ball in 2024. But it hasn't come without enormous adversity. Tornados, hurricanes, injuries, he's been through it all. Now he's thriving. Humility and insatiable curiosity will take him far.

(Hitting .364, with 21 homes and 74 ribbys, mostly against SEC teams. I’d say that’s good. I have him right in the 1.18 - 1.24 range. Cood be there for the Mets)

In 2024, Travis Bazzana has become Oregon State’s career record-holder for:

 Hits

Walks

Runs

Stolen Bases

Homers

Total Bases

Current leader in SLG

T-4th in BA

4th in RBI

He will likely get the doubles crown in the next two weeks. Two away from the triples crown.

(no question he is a top 5 pick, but I don’t see him as a top 3)

Tyler Jennings @TylerJennings24

After struggling to start the year, Nick Kurtz went on an insane mid-season tear. He looks like the key cog he was last year for Wake Forest. Hammers this ball down the third base line for a long opposite field home run that left the bat at 106 MPH. His 21st on the year

(most mock drafts currently have Kurtz as the 1.5 pick. I slipped a pitcher in above him and have him at 1.6)

 Wyatt @RadioWyatt

"not turning my back on the university that gave me a chance out of high school."    Unselfish, class, this is the type of outlook and approach that should be talked about. Charlie Condon of Georgia, college baseball's best hitter (.454, 34 HR) and former walk-on:

Carlos Collazo @CarlosACollazo

I'm curious how much or how little bat length impacts a player's bat speed tracking numbers. Imagine a player using a 32-inch bat for half the season then switching to a 34-inch bat for the second half. How & if the new stats are able to account for that will be interesting.

 Teddy Cahill @tedcahill

             Hagen Smith at Texas A&M

 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 14 K

 On the season: 1.52 ERA, 150 K, 29 BB, 77 IP

(There really is only two five star starters in the upcoming draft and Smith will probably the first one picked)

Brian Recca @brian_recca

            Jackson Wentworth  RHP Kansas State

Short, one batter look at Wentworth who is having a breakout year. Getting starts now but mostly RP in '24. 62.2 IP, 4.02 ERA, 34.6 K%, 6.6 BB%. Some SP traits. Late day 2 pot.

FB: 91-94

CT: 86-89; + pitch

CU: 80-83

CH: 84-86; great feel

(Wentworth was highly scouted out of Waukee HS. 4-pitch guy with projected future as a successful reliever, I’ve got him coming off the board in the 8th-9th round)

            Matt McShane  RHP St. Joseph’s

2nd look @ McShane this spring. Got hit a bit in relief but flashed power arsenal. Lively heater paired w/ snappy breaking ball that altered shapes. Good phys., deceptive, throws w/ effort. 54 K in 38.1 IP

FB: 92-94 t95

SL: 82-86

CU: 79-81

(Brian came up with one that I currently know nothing about.)

            Tanner Smith  Harvard

1st year back from TJ. Big framed RHP at 6'6-240 w/ plus arm strength. High release point. FB was 92-96 (94-96 in 1st) w/ ride. Power CB (83-85) was best pitch. Still ironing out the control but got the 2 inn. save w/ 1 H, 0 BB, 4 K

(Currently in four starts: 2-2, 9.28-ERA… 30-BB in 21.1-IP. I would advise him to go back to Harvard for him senior year to refine his game.)

Ian Smith @IanSmittyGA

Huge game from 2024 2B Max Prozny today. 3-for-3, HR, 2B, BB, HBP. EZ bat speed with massive strength to match in the physical 5-foot-8 frame. A true plus athlete as a dual commit to UVA Baseball and Football.

(MIF/OF… listed 5-10/160… out of Fayatteville, GA. Super physical build Elite runner. 6.38 60… If you like short, fact guys, you should pick him early on the third day. If not…)

Will Hoefer @whoeferbaseball

SS Kyle Debarge (Lousiana-Lafayette, 2024) unloads on a center-cut fastball, going over the scoreboard in right field at J.I. Clements Stadium. Ranked #45 on our latest Prospects Live draft board.

(I’m a little more conservative (strength of schedule) on        Debarge(never liked his music either). Still, impressive 2024 stats: 211-AB, 18=HR, 60-RB1, .356/.420/.711/1.130… I currently have him as a mid to late second round pick.)

Tyler Jennings @TylerJennings24

Daniel Eagen struck out seven in 5.2 innings today, breaking the 100-strikeout barrier in the process. FB felt rather generic at 91- 94, but the CB/SL will make him money. CB has tons of depth and bite at 77-80, SL late sweep at 82-86. Flashed a CH. 4th-5th round type for me

(Impressive 21 year old righty from small school Presbyterian College, down the block from me in Conway, SC.  So far this season: 5-1, 2.72… like I said, small school meaning limited competition. Do this in the SEC and you are a first rounder. For now, a mid to late thurd day pick)

PG Coastal Scouting @PG_Coastal

Sam Cozart (‘25, NC) had it all working today going 6.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB and 12 Ks only throwing 4-pitches from the stretch and facing one over the minimum…held FB velo sitting 91-93 until the 5th where he sat 93-95 mph, with low-80s SL (2,700-2,900+) and mid-70s

(6-7/235 RHP out of Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, NC. Extra strong, athletic built. Committed to Mississippi State. Third day pick.)

Wake Forest Baseball Analytics @Wake_Analytics

20 for Nick Kurtz

91 MPH

33°

376 ft

(this bat will be long gone before the Mets pick… shame… he would have been a great long term replacement on first)

  1. Mack, if we draft a hitter, it HAS to be one who minimizes strikeouts.

    1. This is a big thing to you. I agree that striking out over 25% of the time is troublesome but it usually is the sign of the swing trajectory used by mostly all power hitters going for the wall.

I'd gladly take someone that strikes out 35% of time but hits 40 homers, drives in 76+ and hits in the .270 rabge

  2. We need impact hitters
Speed has been a focus but we need game wreckers

Doesn’t have to be 40 hrs but get us a Bernie Williams and we won’t complain as he was an absolute assassins
