Tom Brennan: METS BUYERS … OR SELLERS? GARRETT A BARGAIN

STANLEY SAYS BUY, OLLIE SAYS SELL…WHAT TO DO?

Some say BUY!

Some say SELL!

I say…first, consider the following:

Over the last 30 days:

Marte has largely been unavailable.

Edwin Diaz cost them some games with his sticky finger suspension.

Reliever Drew Smith went down for the year on the same day Edwin got the heave-ho.

 - The bullpen imploded for 10 games as a result.

Kodai Senga, the ace of the staff, missed the entire 30 days (actually the entire first 100 days).

Yet the Mets went a very solid 20-9 in their last 29 games.

Why?

The hitting has had an all-around boost, and presuming Marte returns in 2-3 weeks, will then get another boost.  The line up, after the season’s ice cold start in ice cold weather, has averaged 5 runs per game.

Starting pitching has improved. And Scott is back in Queens, and Senga should be also, in two weeks or thereabouts. Two thumbs UP.

Diaz, Dedniel, Butto, Garrett, and Houser give them a solid “starting 5” in their bullpen, with possible help soon from Fujinami and Oca. Oldies Ottavino and Diekman get to rest and rejuvenate soon during the ASG break.

And…the next 10 games are against the Nats, Rockies and Marlins, 3+weaker teams.

I see no reason, therefore, why this team cannot play .550 or better ball the rest of the way.

That would make them 41-33 the rest of the way, and 85-77 overall.

Buy a strong pen arm this month, and make that 88-74. Conclusion?

BUYERS.

UNLESS THEY UNEXPECTEDLY TUMBLE & CRUMBLE THIS WEEK.

REID GARRETT IS A BARGAIN…

7-3, 4 saves, 41 IP, over 60 Ks, low ERA….

And he’s making the MLB minimum.  BARGAIN!

  1. "I see no reason" often precedes Mets' predictions. Then they go out and give you a reason. Even if it defies reason. This team will give us fits all year. There is something about its makeup that does not allow everything to run smoothly at once. The starting pitching, the relief pitching, the defense, the hitting, the base running - it seems like there are always at least two of them not working.
If they ever put it together, look out! Otherwise it will be a nail biter until the end struggling for a wild card berth but not having the dominant pitching required to go any further.

  2. I'm neither a buyer nor seller at this point. Better use of the talent we've got is needed.

As I've said before, we've got an abundance of SPs, including 4 LH ones (if you count Lucchesi). The pen, which is basically solid, has ONE LHRP, and he looks like he's on his last legs. Get rid of Diekman, bring up Lucchesi, and put him and Peterson in the pen.

Where else does anyone see a weakness?

  3. Do you, Tom, or anyone else here know why our entire minor league system was closed yesterday and today? Very strange scheduling.

  7. Clifford, since joining AA, is tied for second in slug % at .510. Maybe he is the Mets 2025 first baseman.
