MACK - Sunday Morning Observations

Mack’s Observations –

Yeah, I got a spin on the trade deadline deals.

Basically, this is like salt and pepper to the league’s best team (last two months). Nothing sexy. But no sex lost either.

A real meat and three draft… no top 100 prospects were traded in the league.

Bullpen wise, the Mets added four new relievers during the trading period… Phil Maton (cash/PTBNL), Ryne Stanek (Rhylan Thomas), Huascar Brazoban (Wilfredo Lara), and Tyler Zuber (Paul Gervase). All are righties. Zuber was immediately assigned to Syracuse leaving three new pitchers to join Edwin Diaz and Jose Butto as the core. Still, all are righties.

Tylor Megill was “temporarily” assigned to the pen (whatever the hell that means) and yes, you guessed it… now six righties. This sure sounds like the Young boys (Alex and Danny) are safe for now since they are both lefties. Up in the air is Adam Ottavino.

It's going to be hard to find a more talented SP5 than Phil Blackburn and Jesse Winker is a ton better than the guy he replaced. I’ve already forgot that dude’s name.

Like I said… real great seasoning to a team full of Peter Luger steaks.

Let’s set up the 2025 team…

By my count, OF/2B/SS Luisangel Acuna will be ready to join the team. So will 2B/3B Ronny Mauricio and there is a good chance that CF Drew Gilbert will be ready too. This sort of changes everything when it comes to the bats.

Gilbert would slip into the starting centerfielder, replacing the oft injured Harrison Bader. Mauricio could either replace Mark Vientos if you want to move him to either first base or DH and Acuna can become second baseman if you want to move Jeff McNeil to the outfield or put him in a corner alongside Gilbert and Brandon Nimmo.

This gives you very little wiggle room to add Juan Soto AND keep Pete.

I project Mark Vientos to be a 40+ home run hitter and Francisco Alvarez at around 35 max. Hell, Vientos could hit 50. This changes everything for the projected middle of the order. Either Alonso or Soto would make this quite the 3-4-5 combination. I can’t even imagine all four in the same lineup.

  1. Huascar Brazoban immediately went into the Mets fans’ doghouse. JD Martinez had just hit a grand slam, giving the Mets a 4-2 7th inning lead. HB comes in, gets two quick outs, then gets wild, going to 3-2 and allowing a meatball single to center. Then walks Schanuel. Then falls behind Neto and Neto hits a 3 run homer. 5-4, Mets fail to answer back. Bum.

Phillis and Braves lost, an epic chance to tighten this race coughed up. Bum.

Fujinami in his first AAA game back? 2 perfect innings, one K. Dude is an enigma.

  3. Steve, well deserved promotion, wouldn't you say? Eleven straight strikeouts.

  4. Excellent last outing. Contrary to many, I would let him finish the year in Syracuse. Finish strong there and make the decision on where to be over the winter.

Love to see him strike out the side in his next start for the record 14 straight.

  5. I went to bed early last night

Woke up... checked score... 4-1 Mets late in game... went back to sleep with smile on my face

  6. It's funny...

I continue to write these Sunday and Tuesday posts and everyone always seems to avoid the subjects I write about

    Today

The draft and the 2025 team

    Comments... crickets

Don't bother writing about it now... I'm tuning out and need to start getting the house ready for the hurricane

    Just food for future thought

  7. Very surprised Mendoza stuck with Brazoban. That sucked. Mark Vientos barely moved his feet on that single by Kevin Pillar.

Next year: no Soto, no Polar Bear. McNeil is traded. I don’t trust Acuna. but have to give him a chance.
Lineup is Vientos, Mauricio, Baty, Lindor, Nimmo, Gilbert/Taylor, Acuna, SP’s: Senga, Butto, Peterson, Blackburn, Sproat, Sasaki, Vasil, Hamel, Megill, a lefty free agent.

Reset the penalty, bring up the kids

  8. Very confident that Mauricio’ missed year won’t stunt him?

  9. So much changes with the draft a year out so it is hard to focus there for me.

  11. Don’t agree with the trade deadline
We should have traded more for better ingredients and if it meant a top prospect we would have to evaluate accordingly

But to say we did well by not trading any I am not sure I would say that

Sprout benge Clifford tong probably Jett are really the only untouchables (the last year international too signing too)

We have to sign Soto next year if we keep these young players
If so Soto RF. Nimmo LF and one of the kids in CF
    Marte shares DH with others
