Lots of old guys. I do like youth, so how about that 26 year old outfield guy? Corbin Burnes, too. Oddly, freeagent to be Fujinami had another excellent, in this case 2 inning, relief outing in Syracuse, after Hamel and Lucchesi got rocked.
ReplyDeleteIn looking at the list, there is not many that makes me say "got to sign". More like "not to sign". Even the 26 year old, IMO. Generational talent but with the financial commitment and 2025 (and 2026?) being a reset year?
ReplyDeleteSteve, it should be an interesting winter. I am relieved Verlander will not vest on his 35 million option for 2025, of which the Mets would have shouldered half. Huge $$ coming off books going into 2025.
ReplyDeleteI don't even want to think about what this team would be like next year if we let these guys just walk away....
ReplyDeletePete Alonso, 1B
J.D. Martinez, DH
Luis Severino, RHP
Drew Smith, RRP
Sean Manaea, LHP
Iglesias, Jose, IF
Harrison Bader, CF
Jesse Winker, RF
Well moneys not an issue right Steve so David your on the clock my man make me proud. I'm most excited about the solid group of youngsters next year health willing. Mauricio, Williams, Gilbert, Acuna, Sproat at least should have shot at a roster spot come opening day just stay healthy guys.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see Manaea and Winker back.
ReplyDeleteI’d be very happy to have Manea back, and I’d be fine with bringing back Bader as well. The others can mostly go, including Alonso if it means 5+ yrs at big money. I’d consider bringing Winker back, but it would be hard to guarantee him a full time role, which he may be looking for. McNeil’s resurgence gives the team some flexibility in waiting for Williams and/or Acuña to prove they’re ready at 2B. Three guys (Vientos, Baty, Mauricio) could already be competing for the 3B job, and with Marte’s ‘25 salary, he’ll be here to maybe soften the timeline for Gilbert to be ready. Even with all of the expirings, that’s a relatively full roster for non-pitchers.
ReplyDeleteIf they somehow sign Soto, then I’d guess they’ll go after a TOR starter this offseason. If the don’t, they may well decide to wait until ‘26 to add that expensive and inherently risky piece.
I don't expect Williams, Gilbert, Clifford, Acuna, or Sproat to be starting players to begin 2025...only Mauricio. Unless the Mets are writing off contending next season (they didn't this season) they are going to need more of their FAs back, or maybe some from other teams to replace them. I'd like to see them hold on to Alonso, Iglesias, Winker, & Bader (unless they actually sign Soto...doubtful)
ReplyDeletePitching...even if they re-sign Manaea, they only have him Senga, and Peterson as starters...maybe Scott & Megill...not enough.
Nickel, I am not worried about Stearns. It is sad Gilbert and Jett played so little and retarded their ascent, and Vasil and Hamel are very disappointing, too. Stearns will adjust.
ReplyDeleteagree about Stearns...he and Mendoza have been excellent
