WHO’S YOUR DADDY? ARRGGHH!
Mets lose decisively in game one of this critical 3 game series.
Until the Mets win a critical late season game against the Braves, Pedro Martinez’s words from 20 years ago ring loudly in my ears:
“WHO’S YOUR DADDY?”
Right now, especially with Chris Sale pitching next for the Braves, the answer is unchanged. The Braves are the Mets’ Daddy.
Brandon Nimmo said "they're not just gonna roll over and die for you." The Mets have a habit, though, of doing exactly that.
JESUS IS AN ALL STAR
St. Lucie 19 year old infielder Jesus Baez was named the All Star third baseman for the Florida State League.
Baez played in 64 games for St. Lucie and slashed .262/.338/.444 with 10 home runs, and had a 17 game hitting streak.
He had a problem, though, that occurred all too frequently with Mets position prospects:
An injury of an extended nature.
He had a meniscus tear in his knee that required season-ending surgery in early July. I imagine Baez should be fully rehabbed and 100% ready to go in 2025.
His last game was July 2, his 8th game after being promoted to Brooklyn, where he added his 11th season HR and batted .267.
He had just 51 Ks in 72 games in 2024, whereas most Mets prospect hitters strike out a whole lot more. That is promising.
Baez has 20 HRs and 37 other extra base hits and 94 RBIs in 686 minor league at bats, all before he turns 20 (next February). Nice!
Get healthy and stay healthy, Senor Baez.
The Queens club always needs that sort of power.
He is the Mets 14th ranked prospect, and his write up in their top 30 Prospect list is comprehensive and is partially excerpted as follows:
Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45
The Mets signed Baez for just $275,000 out of the Dominican Republic in January 2022 (and) he became a standout quickly. The right-handed slugger won the organization’s DSL Player of the Year award after slashing .242/.341/.403 with seven homers over 54 games on the international complex circuit, and many had high hopes as he arrived stateside.
Instead, Baez hit just .210/.306/.333 with two long balls in 40 games in the Florida Complex League, resulting in a 71 wRC+, though he was one of only 25 players aged 18 or younger to get at least 160 plate appearances on the loop.
He was in the midst of a breakout 2024 season in which he climbed from Single-A to High-A when he suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee in early July, an injury that resulted in season-ending surgery.
Baez is listed at a stout 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, and while he has shown some in-game power in the Minors thanks to impressive bat speed, he still stands out most for the pop that should come in time.
Baez is a below-average runner unlikely to beat out ground balls for singles, so he’ll need to rely on loud, elevated contact to improve his offensive numbers. He split time up the middle between shortstop and second base in 2023, but his size, lack of speed and plus arm strength all point to a future at third, where he got a decent amount of time before the knee injury.
Baez's knee tear was on his plant knee which will cause some degree of power lost in his swing
ReplyDeleteAlso loss of on base kiddyup
We shall see
O.K. lets try this....how about having Mr. Cohen go to the Commish and ask very nicely if starting next year we could play all our road games with the Braves in a neutral site? Geez that was ugly and now Sale but it maybe moved to Monday so we win in Milwaukee which is the backdoor but why not. Very disappointing.

Mack - naturally
ReplyDeleteGary, Sean and Jose, and a day of rain? The Mets need divine intervention
ReplyDeleteAll the things that needed to be done last night that were to the Mets advantage did not happen - Braves took it. Starter went short, causing bullpen stress. Defense made untimely and unlikely miscues while the Braves' shoddy defense looked like all-stars. Hard hits were caught while Braves' dinkers fell in. Frustrating! But now comes a test in resilliency.
ReplyDeleteMany things yesterday went Braves way, but Mets were very helpful also. The Alvarez play was a kid’s aggressiveness and that was unfortunate. Severino had nothing. The fastball was fast, but the slider wasn’t there. He didn’t throw any sinkers, even when he needed a DP. The bleeders are part of the game. Their guy pitched away, away, away, all night. Whatever.
ReplyDeleteWhat is Marte doing hitting third against a righty? Alonso? Just the whole lineup showed nothing.
Gus, the Mets played like flat Reingold Beer
ReplyDeleteRemember those vote pads/ballot boxes to fill out for the Rheingold girl of the year
DeleteI used to stuff those boxes for votes on the girl with the biggest hops
Don't remember the Rhingold slogan.

ReplyDeleteDJ, thanks. I like the offensive guys there. Surprised to see Tebrake there.
ReplyDeleteHe apparently was on IR during 2024. Good stats in 2023.
DeleteMack, probably not quite old enough to remember that one
