MACK - Wednesday Morning Observations

ESB/NYM                 @ESBNYM

Manaea extension is 100% a priority this offseason, what a job he’s done

Mack -  Agree. Sure, he is over 30, but he’s pitching the best baseball of his career. He loves NYC and there is a chance you could talk him away from a lengthy contract by another team with a two year deal. It’s not like anyone in the chain is knocking the doors down.

I'm not crazy enough to think this will convince those who don't want to be convinced, but Inside Edge adds the granular data I could not track myself. On a PER-PITCH basis, catchers with one-knee down have allowed fewer WP and PBs than catchers in a traditional setup.

I've noted that I can't believe that 99.9% of MLB catchers wouldn't have adopted something if it was counterproductive to do so.

But when the broadcast last night says "you can't block that from one-knee down" well, all evidence says, you can.

Mack – Trust me… if this wasn’t working, catchers in the majors wouldn’t be doing it.

Sad news for the industry: The Chicago White Sox have let go of several area scouts in the Dominican Republic, according to sources.

Mack – Have you noticed how many teams are offing scouts, yet aren’t replacing them with boots on the ground replacements? Welcome to the new and unimproved analytic era.

News: Right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano will be signing with an MLB team as an international free agent this winter, sources tell ESPN.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/41604878/sources-tomoyuki-sugano-heading-mlb-japanese-career -

Sugano, who turns 35 in a week, is in the midst of a renaissance season that has seen him post a 1.67 ERA over 24 starts for the Central League champion Yomiuri Giants. He is a two-time winner of the Sawamura Award -- the equivalent of the Cy Young -- two-time Central League MVP and four-time ERA champion, and his reemergence paved the way for him to finally reach MLB.

MLB Pipeline          @MLBPipeline

On Sept. 14, 2022, Tobias Myers allowed six runs in one inning for Triple-A Charlotte, making his record 1-15 and his ERA 7.82. Two years later, he's lined up to start a winner-take-all Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series.

5 Mets minor league pitchers touched 100 MPH in 2024. Brandon Sproat, Yacksel Rios, Ryan Lambert, Wilson Lopez and Wellington Aracena (who did it at only 19 years old)

Ernest Dove             @ernestdove

Lopez & Aracena are both the definition of "projects" in the "what if" category of arms in Mets system. Have to wait out the process, pitching lab, coaching the whole 9 yards.

Sources tell me Mets are no longer signing  Cuban catcher Yeison Acosta. Acosta  after the Mets decided not to sign him  after “agreeing” to a deal for $300K . has signed with the Baltimore Orioles. This is a very interesting signing for the Orioles, Acosta has big power potential, but his defensive home is still TBD .

I hope the New Mets  IFA Boss  Can fix some ongoing issues on the Dominican side . Mets passed on a catcher for $300K Orioles scooped him up , Mets couldn’t come to an agreement with a Top Dominican pitcher  , Dodgers scooped him up quickly

Wilmer Lugo getting ready for the month long DSL Fall  Ball that starts at the end of this month.  The Good Lugo has legit stuff, his slider/slurve is too good for this level. The Bad,  he has no clue where the ball is going. 32IP 28BB 19WP

I was told Mets had a “deal” to sign a Top Outfielder from the Dominican Republic in the 2027 Class , but it fell apart at the last minute. To hand over this kind of money obviously a lot of people have to OKAY it . All the Mets Top People were There. The  Academy was expecting a offer , A final offer never came

Mets will not be signing Raymel Ortiz  for a lesser Bonus in the 2025 IFA class , at the moment Ortiz is not connected to any other MLB teams either.

MACK – metZZ is the best guy on the Internet to get poop regarding the Mets International system.

 Follow him.

Brett Baty, who is on the Mets taxi squad: “It means a whole lot for sure just to be back here, put myself in a place to maybe make an impact. I am really proud of the guys and the job they have done this year.”

MACK – I’m thrilled to see Brett back in the locker room, but frankly, that’s where he should remain throughout the playoffs. My hope is he continues to work at second base as a side hustle and comes back next year as one of the two utility infielders.

Here's the top prospect going to the Arizona Fall League from every team –

Mets: Jett Williams, SS/OF (No. 2/MLB No. 53)

The 2022 14th overall pick climbed three levels from Single-A to Double-A in a breakout first full season but was robbed of a strong followup when right wrist surgery forced him to miss four months this summer. Williams managed only 33 games as a result, making him an easy pick to lead the Mets’ AFL contingent. At his best, the 20-year-old doesn’t expand the zone, leading to strong OBPs, and is a menace on the basepaths with his plus speed.

  1. Manaea I'd give 3 years to.

Milwaukee is our trigger: going all the way

Jett Williams was 1 for 5 last night, as was Gilbert, and Reimer 2 for 4. The trio combined for 4 RBIs - and 3 errors. Somebody needs to tell them that the Mets make no errors.

  2. Who knew that the DSL has fall ball? I wonder if only High School graduates (or drop outs) can attend that? It is school time. Evert time I see the name WIlmer Lugo I think of John from Albany's favorite player - Wilmer Reyes, who never attained the lofty heights of Danny Muno.

  3. I sometimes wonder how Jordany Valdespin is doing, don't you?

  4. Mack,
I always look forward to your Mets reports from the minors and especially the International signings. I noticed that the Mets activated outfielder Anthony Baptist on August 27. He had been placed on the restricted list in March for an "age" violation after signing in 2023.
You are right there needs to be some oversight in the Mets dealings in the International area.

    1. And, I've been privy to texts that the reason the Mets Director on Intl scouting was removed was because Baptist wasn't the only one

  5. So, it was not just the Director and Scouts...Baptist himself was restricted for an entire season. That is a very significant penalty for the players who are dishonest about their age, which I am supposing is what happened here, perhaps with the Director's knowledge??

  6. I am not a gambler, but I like these odds:
Series winner: Phillies +210 (bet $10 to win $31 total); Mets -265 (bet $10 to win $13.77 total)

  7. I don't understand that list of ticket prices. Just one in particular stands out--- Yankees prices much LESS thsn the Mets?

Phils and Padres much higher than all others, while the Yankees and Dodgers are the LOWEST?

Makes no sense. I can hear Desi saying "'splain me dis, Looosey". 😁
