SAVAGE VIEWS – WHAT’S NEXT, MR. COHEN?

 SAVAGE VIEWS

I was on the phone yesterday morning speaking to my son, Denis, when he told me the Mets would sign Soto before the end of the day. Not sure where he got that information, but he was spot on.

The closest parallel I could remember was the trade for Mike Piazza which effectively transformed the team into a playoff contender. As good as Piazza was, he had a terrific supporting cast which included Darryl Strawberry, Doc Gooden, Keith Hernandez, Mookie Wilson and a host of other really good players.

At this stage, we are a far cry from the 1986 team, although we do have a number of talented players.  Moves still have to be made in order for us to be a true caliber playoff team. Now that Soto is on board, I’m in favor of bringing back Pete Alonso under a reasonable contract not exceeding 5 years.

If not Pete, then perhaps Teoscar Hernandez for the DH role. A lineup of Lindor, Vientos, Soto, Alonso (or Hernandez,) Nimmo, Alvarez, McNeil, Acuna and Baty would potential be the best in MLB. I strongly support bringing back Baty one more time. I love his potential. If Mauricio is not ready, then I would consider bringing back Iglesias.  Marte and Winkler would make up a strong bench.

Thus far, I have been underwhelmed with the additions to the rotation.  Frankie Montas is another reclamation project who could be a bit hit or a major miss. Clay Holmes as a starter is another risky move.

In order to be truly competitive next year, one of Max Fried or Corbin Burnes needs to be signed. On top of that, at least two powerful arms need to be added to the pen. What’s the story on Brooks Raley?

It’s a good time to be a Mets fan.

  1. Your son told you YESTERDAY that Soto would sign? That's only a day after the deal was announced on Sunday. 🙃
He must have a great inside source!

  2. Ray, it is a great time to be a Mets fan. I used to fret like heck in the Wilpon/Sandy Alderson days about "too few signings". I trust David Stearns to get it right in the remaining roster re-stocking period.

  3. I think the Soto signing makes a trade for Crochet (sp?) more likely. I do think they’re going to try to stay under the top tax penalty, and grabbing a (potentially) top starter for under $4 mil for ‘25 would help a lot. Not sure if we have the prospect capital - and I definitely don’t want to see us clear out half of our top ten to get him, but we’ll see. Beuhler is another not-top-of-the-market possibility on a 1+1 prove it deal. Hard to see them re-signing Alonso unless they get a cheap starter and decide not to bring Mack Manaea. But I think I’d rather spend for three years or Manaea than five (or 6!) years of Pete.
