On 12-5-24, MLB.com posted their top 100 prospects in the
upcoming draft. Beginning 2-2-25, we will post it in backward order, ending
with the pick for 1.1
#51 Lucas Franco
SS Cinco Ranch
(TX)
17/years old 6'
3" 180
COMMITTED - Texas Christian
Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 45 | Arm: 55 |
Field: 60 | Overall: 50
One of the best defensive shortstops in the prep class,
Franco has a similar profile to fellow Texas product Wyatt Sanford, who signed
for an over-slot $2.5 million as a Pirates second-rounder last July. Unlike
Sanford, who shot up Draft boards as a senior, Franco has been famous since
early in his high school career. He was less impressive on the showcase circuit
last summer than the year before, but clubs still love his projection and
ceiling.
Though he's a fringy to average runner, Franco has a quick
first step and covers ground to both sides at shortstop. He has smooth actions,
quick hands, solid arm strength and the ability to make throws from a variety
of angles. There's a chance that he'll slow down once he adds more muscle to
his skinny 6-foot-3 frame, but his defensive tools and instincts should allow
him to remain at short.
At his best, Franco uses a controlled left-handed stroke and
disciplined approach to make consistent contact. The Texas Christian recruit
tried to do too much at the plate last summer, chasing pitches and struggling
against non-fastballs. The hope is that he'll grow into average power once he
settles down and gains more strength.

school prospects entering the spring
19. Lucas Franco, SS, Katy (Texas)
A left-handed hitter, Franco is selective at the plate and
makes good contact, leading to great on-base percentages. He has good footwork
at shortstop, but only average speed. At 6-foot-5, 170 pounds he has room to
put on muscle and could move to third base.

With three picks in the top 33, the Brewers, who already had
four players in Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects, can add to their already
stout farm system.

53. Lucas Franco – SS
HT/WT: 6’3/175 | Bat/Throw: L/R | School: Cinco Ranch (TX) |
Commitment: Texas Christian | Age: 18.2
An athletic and projectable infielder, Franco has risen up
the ranks over the past year thanks to a solid toolset. Franco is a great
athlete with a long, lean body type that oozes projection. Franco has very
quick hands and rotates well, displaying budding bat speed and fluidity
throughout a beautifully balanced left-handed swing.
There’s some loft already present and utilizes his lower half
well, meaning there’s a solid chance that he achieves average or better power
as he grows into his body. His contact quality is improving as time goes on and
his plate discipline is selective, waiting for his pitch to attack.
He does a great job of staying within the zone and minimizing
chases, though he did boast an elevated whiff rate this summer. He’s got the
defensive chops to stay at shortstop, as he has soft hands, fluid motions, and
a strong arm across the diamond.
As he fills out, he may have to move to the hot corner. The
projection surrounding Franco’s profile is the selling point and if he can add
weight and improve his contact further, the Texas Christian commit will be one
of the first preps off the board.

2024 National Showcase
Lucas Franco is a 2025 SS/3B with a 6-3 175 lb. frame from
Katy, TX who attends Cinco Ranch. Long and lean athletic build, very
projectable physically. Left handed hitter, has a very simple and quiet set up
at the plate, starts wide with a short rock back load, loose and easy swing
with some lift to it, very loose hands, creates barrel ship, consistent
barrels, huge power projection when he fills out and gets stronger. 6.82 runner
in the sixty. Primary shortstop on defense, has a quick first step and moves well,
twitchy athletic actions, has a strong arm with carry. Good student, verbal
commitment to Texas Christian. Selected to play in the Perfect Game
All-American Classic.
