#22 Cameron Appenzeller
LHP Glenwood (IL)
17 6' 6" 180
COMMITTED - Tennessee
Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 |
Control: 50 | Overall: 50
Illinois has spawned four high school pitchers who signed for
first-round money in the last three Drafts -- Owen Murphy, Noah Schultz, Blake
Wolters, Ryan Sloan -- and has another one coming for 2025. Appenzeller is one
of the more projectable left-handers available and has a higher ceiling at the
same stage than fellow Glenwood HS (Chatham) product Reid Detmers, who became a
first-rounder after three years at Louisville. His stuff took a step forward in
2024, and teams believe he has much more left in his tank.
Appenzeller has boosted his fastball from the mid 80s as a
sophomore to the upper 80s as a junior to the low 90s last summer, topping out
at 94 mph. He can generate carry on a four-seamer and arm-side run and sink on
a two-seamer. He gets plenty of horizontal action on an upper-70s slider, and
his low-80s changeup fades in the opposite direction.
Appenzeller still has plenty of room to put weight on his
athletic 6-foot-6 frame, which should add more power to his fastball and slider
and create more separation between his heater and changeup. The Tennessee
recruit repeats his delivery well, filling the strike zone from a low, wide arm
angle that is tough on left-handed hitters. He combines stuff and savvy and
also draws praise for his mound presence.

14. Tampa Bay Rays: Cameron Appenzeller, LHP, Glenwood HS
A 6-foot-5 southpaw with ‘plus’ athleticism would provide the
Tampa Bay Rays player development program with plenty to work with. Cameron
Appenzeller, a Tennessee commit, is already seeing velocity gains with an
advanced feel for his slider and changeup. Appenzeller’s ceiling is extremely
high because of his frame and athleticism, with the Rays one of the perfect
teams to maximize his repertoire and size.

school prospects entering the spring
9. Cameron Appenzeller, LHP, Chatham (Illinois)
Appenzeller hails from the same high school as Reid Detmers,
and displays good command and good movement. At 6-foot-5, 180 pounds he could
add strength in the coming years and add speed to his 92 mph fastball.

No. 19 Baltimore Orioles: Cameron Appenzeller , LHP, Chatham,
Ill.
The 6-foot-5, 180-pound lefty is one of the few first-round
projected pitchers left at this point. Baltimore’s farm system is stacked with
everyday talent, but not so much on the pitching.
2-1-25 –
Camerson Appenzeller (LHP), Glenwood High School (IL)
Appenzeller would be the best option if the Reds want to
break from their infield-heavy draft trends. The 6-foot-6 left-hander has
gained 8-10 mph on his fastball over the past year, now sitting in the low 90s
and topping out at 94.
With his projectable frame, three-pitch mix, and advanced
feel for pitching, he fits the mold of a high-upside prep arm that Cincinnati
could develop into a frontline starter. The Reds have shown they can develop
pitching talent in recent years, making Appenzeller an ideal addition to their
farm system.

22. Atlanta Braves: LHP Cameron Appenzeller, Glenwood HS (IL)
The Braves are one of the few teams that has not shied away
from drafting high school pitching in the first round, and that gives them
their pick of high-ceiling preps here with only Seth Hernandez and Kruz
Schoolcraft off the board from that demographic in this mock scenario.
Appenzeller is a projectable 6'6", 180-pound lefty with three quality
pitches, repeatable mechanics and good command.

2. Cameron Appenzeller – LHP
HT/WT: 6’5/185 | Bat/Throw: L/L | School: Glenwood (IL) |
Commitment: Tennessee | Age: 18.5
At 6’5, 185 pounds, Appenzeller is insanely projectable and
projects to be one of the best southpaws in the class. Appenzeller’s delivery
is incredibly easy and he oozes athleticism on the bump, creating fast arm
speed and a slingy action to a lower release.
As a result of the low release, he generates quite a bit of
armside run on the fastball, sitting in the 88-92 MPH bucket and tickling 93-94
MPH in shorter spurts. When in the zone, the pitch jumps on batters and he’ll
execute on the top rail for whiffs.
Given the projection, there’s a good chance Appenzeller could
reach 95+ MPH in due time. His upper-70s sweeper flashes solid bite and spin
traits and his low-80s change-up has heavy fade and tumble, projecting as an
above-average offering.
He commands all three pitches well and may ultimately need a
firmer breaker to give himself a “bridge pitch.” He’s a legitimate data darling
who should continue to garner interest as he adds muscle to his lanky frame.
Appenzeller flipped his commitment to Tony Vitello’s camp in October, joining a
stout Tennessee recruiting class.

17. Chicago Cubs
Cameron Appenzeller, LHP — Glenwood
HOMETOWN: Springfield, Illinois
HEIGHT: 6-5
WEIGHT: 185
BAT/THROW: L-L
What Appenzeller lacks in present stuff he more than makes up
for in terms of projection. This is as good as it gets from an upside
perspective. A tall, lean left-hander, Appenzeller lives in low-90s but
projects to tick into the mid 90s with his long, wiry frame. He’s already
grabbed 94 but is yet to make his anticipated significant velocity jump. It’s a
controlled delivery featuring very little effort. The arm action works well
with looseness and fluid athleticism, some funk and angles.
Appenzeller throws an above-average low-80s slider that
flashes ‘plus’ upside with big two-plane tilt. Appenzeller shows a real
understanding for shaping the baseball with a willingness to sweep the ball
away from left-handed bats and bury breakers onto the back-foot of righties.
The changeup has taken major strides over the last several months and is
routinely average with more ceiling coming. It’s a low-to-mid 80s off-speed
weapon with strong action into the left-handed batters box.
Appenzeller is one of the more premium arms in the class with
strikes, projection, three pitches and a good breaker. A two-sport guy,
Appenzeller is also a talented basketball player. Tons to like here with even
more to dream on.

Glenwood LHP Cam Appenzeller makes
headlines on the mound, but he’s also put together a nasty hype reel of dunks
over the years AND he’s a scratch golfer.
Expected to be a first round pick in July.

Glenwood LHP Cameron Appenzeller (Springfiled Il.) is one of
the best HS pitchers in the country. In fact, he currently ranks as my No. 1 HS
arm in the country for 2025. The projection is infinite. But he's also an
unbelievably talented golfer. And he boasts highlight reel dunks

2024 National Showcase
Cameron Appenzeller is a 2025 LHP/1B/OF with a 6-5 180 lb.
frame from Springfield, IL who attends Glenwood HS. Extra large frame and build
with long limbs, broad shoulders, and lots of physical projection remaining.
Primary left-handed pitcher who only pitched during the event. Free and easy
delivery with a very low effort release.
Athletic delivery and repeats pretty well. Low arm slot and
throws two different fastballs while topping out at 93 mph. Held the low-90s
throughout the outing, getting up to 19" of horizontal break on the two
seam with up to 17" of IVB on the four seam.
Tunnels slider really well and acts as a flat sweeper. Very
good pitch against left-handed hitters and has the comfort to land the pitch
for strikes. Showed the changeup in his second inning of work, landing the
pitch for strikes and getting up to 16" of horizontal break. Very advanced
three pitch mix with command and substantial projection remaining. Tremendous
student. Verbal commitment to South Carolina. Selected to play in the Perfect
Game All-American Classic.
https://garnetandcocky.com/2023/10/16/south-carolina-baseball-appenzeller-commits/ -
The 6’5″ Appenzeller is very thin, but he is very projectable
as a prospect. With a lot of strength still to be added to his frame,
Appenzeller already throws in the mid-high 80s as a new high school junior. It
is very realistic that the Illinois native will add several miles per hour to
his fastball. He also throws a heavy curveball that features a lot of downward
break.
Appenzeller is not quite as highly ranked as some of the
other South Carolina baseball commitments, but a strong showing this summer and
fall in travel baseball could see him receive a bump in the rankings. He also
spends some time playing first base and corner outfield and has a swing that
could develop some power as he gets stronger.
