When the Homestead Grays catcher suffered a
hand injury during a game, Mgr. Judy Johnson, who
knew of Josh
Gibson's reputation as a terrific semipro player, went into the
stands looking for the 18-year-old player.
"I asked Josh if he wanted to catch and
he said 'yes, sir,' so we had to hold up the game while he went and put on Buck
Ewing's uniform.
We signed him the next day."
Judy Johnson
"Josh Gibson was the greatest hitter I
ever pitched to.
And I pitched to everybody.
There’s been some great hitters, Williams,
DiMaggio, Musial, Mays, Mantle.
But none of them was as great as Josh
Gibson".
Satchel Paige
“Any big league club would like to buy Josh
Gibson for $200,000.
He can do everything. He hits that ball a
mile.
And he catches so easy he might just as well
be in a rocking chair.
Throws like a rifle.
Bill Dickey isn’t
as good a catcher.
Too bad this Gibson is a colored fellow.”

Povich

More good stuff. I wonder who the Mets will lose in the Rule 5?
ReplyDeleteInteresting, that Top 100 ranking has Williams at 42, but Reimer very close behind at 50. Another sign that Reimer, and not Clifford, is the one to focus on. Reimer being 22 slots above Sproat is also eye- opening.
Josh Gibson would have been something to watch.
Not a lot of folks on the Rule 5 list that I think teams will take a chance on, but I hope they overlook TJ Shook. Shook is an underrated reliever with a lot of deception on his pitches.
DeleteSo, what was Josh Gibson doing just sitting up in the stands? And how did they know he was there? Whatever. Have you ever tried to just search the stands looking for someone specific? It sounds like Gibson was incredible.
ReplyDeleteI’ve always loved O’Neil Cruz. He and Mauricio are clones. Problem is, one plus in Pittsburgh where there is little attention and the other one will be in Syracuse next April, with no one paying much attention.
This RC+ fallers are very interesting, but we need to ask ourselves where the outliers are. There are many players there that had incredible luck last year or bad breaks this year.
