(pictured: a young Jarred Kelenic)
Mack thought so, in an article this AM.
I noted the following…what do you readers think about the following:
I read this about Kelenic: Kelenic has a nice walk rate to work with, sitting between 7.1-9.9% over his career, and he has a cannon of an arm in the outfield while providing league average defense.
Why not get him for the Mets? He’s a project.
One key…in his career, he has swung at just 32.4% of first pitches, a low, Vientos-like rate. It doesn’t work for Kelenic.. In a whopping 56% of his PAs, his ABs end on 2 strikes, where he hits a horrific .136/.210/.229.
Seems that much more aggression on strike one can fix him.

Also:
Kelenic swings at 32% of first pitches. Bichette swings at 42% of first pitches. Since Kelenic is a lesser hitter than Bichette, he should swing at MORE first pitches than Bichette, not far less. So…I would target Kelenic to increase his first pitch swing rate by 40%, raising the rate from 32% to 45%.

Kelenic was one of the most prized prospects in the farm system of the Wilpon Mets. We all remember the disappointment of giving up that "gem" in a trade. These are the new Mets, with a much deeper and more talented farm system. Obtaining Kelenic only puts him in competition with the new guys and obstructs their path to the majors. I would let the past remain the past and move forward with Benge, Ewing, Morabito, and Williams.
And Clifford and Reimer. BUT… how can we really know if any of them, besides Benge, will be good solid major league hitters? More than Kelenic has been? Kelenic in 2021, pre-call up, in AAA hit .320/.392/.624 in 30 games. Have our guys done that? Then Jarred hit .181 as a big leaguer that rookie year.
I agree in principle with Paul but I would sign him for one MLB season
Not any longer but it won't happen.
Not a Stearns guy
I guess we will find out who the Stearns guys are by mid March. One of them used to be Keon Broxton. Another was Jose Siri. Scary.
I would give Kelenic another shot, if for no other reason than
as a back-up defensive outfielder.
Just tell him 3 things: Swing swing swing.
Would Kelenic want to come back? Don’t forget, he is a f r e e agent. I’m sure he is getting minor leagues offers from everyone, and he is out of options. So…
… go sit down.
This is just me wondering what a world we live in when our star SS buys a 21.5 million dollar penthouse in the city further illitrating the damage done after free agency hit over 50 years ago which was the worst thing to ever happen for fans but of course professional sports was never about what's best for the fans. Always follow the money I was once told and is that ever true. I grew up in Bay Ridge Brooklyn on Shore road and 99th street just 4 blocks from where the Narrows Verrazano bridge would be built a few years later and remember a few Dodger players who lived a couple of blocks away and I think it was Hodges and Reese and seeing them walking the neighborhood with their families and being able to relate and feel a part of the community was wonderful and of course long gone. Sorry just an old guy rambling about a long ago time I would relive in a heartbeat.
I'd sooner take a chance on Kelenic as an outfielder than penciling in Taylor for 162 games. He's not a difference maker right now but for how little he would cost he's a better option than some of the Stearns "brilliant" moves since he's been here like Bader, Mullins, Martinez, Siri and a host of odd pitching choices.
I predict that Clifford and Reimer will not make the cut. They will eventually become Kelenics.
I would take a hard pass. That role (LHOF) belongs to Benge (when ready). We already have way too many “under-developed” mlb players: Vientos, Mauricio, Acuna, plus Baty & Alvarez in the roster. Plus probably more: Luis Overts anyone?
Luis Roberts
Kelenic on a minor league option doesn’t hurt any of the kids. Benge and Jett are the only ones in triple A and there are 3 outfield position and DH they can all share for 3 months at most.
Plus I think Benge should bat 9th and play CF. I want a chance at the extra draft pick for rookie of the year winner. With him and McLean on opening day roster we have a good chance.
Only question I have is if we do get that extra first round late round pick for For winning ROY And we pick up a Top free , would that be the pick we lose instead of our second round pick?
But, Gary, on the other hand, I remember when Drysdale and Koufax jointly held out for a combined 275,000 for one year, and management wouldn’t bend whatsoever. Not a penny. I wonder if management had not been so darned greedy if free agency would’ve been greatly delayed or even not happened
I sure didn’t watch Roberts on a day-to-day basis, but he has the most upside of anybody if he could ever straighten out his hitting problems. The first three years he was in the league. He looked super promising. The last two years, far from it. But it could be from playing for the gosh, awful White Sox. It is depressing. I’m sure to lose 70% of your games.
If I were Kelenic I would go to whatever team I had the best chance to play a lot of major-league ball with . unless he is convinced in his mind that a few months in AAA would straighten him out. Remember that the flailing Chris Flexin went overseas, got more experience and came back to the majors and put up a 14–6 season. So, if Jared spent a little more time in AAA, just trying to tear things up maybe that would be the spring board back to the best success. A guy does not want to get in over his head and fail and have the party and completely. For that matter, maybe Jared should go overseas and play there. Better money, and probably lots of playing time.
Taylor made a bunch of great CF plays in 2025. Stearns has to love his D.
Funny that I looked up Flexen, and after 2 brutal Whie Sox seasons in 2023 and 2024, he starts out in 2025 in Cubs AAA, does great, gets called up and has 17 straight fine relief outings, surrender almost no runs, but then has 4 bad ones and Buh-bye. He got a lot of mileage with mediocre talent. Good for him.
