Mack's Mets - Hot Thread

We are in the “Hot Stove” season, where every conversation centers around the latest news in MLB trades and free agent acquisitions.

Often we will include a feature where our writers discuss what is happening, but this year we want more involvement from the readers.

We have combined two traditional features, “Hot Stove” and “Open Thread”  into this year’s “Hot Thread” which will run every Tuesday at 6:00am EST.

Considering the recent market activity and knowing your team’s needs, what would your next move be?  Hope we have sparked your interest! Tell us in the comments below.

Last week’s transactions:

Toronto signed 3B Kazuma Okamoto. 4 years, $60M.

Marlins acquired LHP Kade Bragg from the Minnesota Twins for 1B Eric Wagaman.

Chicago Cubs signed RHP Hunter Harvey. 1 year, $6M.

Yankees signed IF Ahmed Rosario. 1 year, $2.5M.

Dodgers traded LF Esteury Ruiz to the Marlins for RHP Adriano Marrero.

Houston Astros signed free agent RHP Tatsuya Imai. 3 Years, $54M.

San Francisco added RHP Adrian Houser on a two-year, $22 million contract.  Also signed RHP Tyler Mahle to a 1 year, $10M deal.

Last week’s rumors:

Several clubs (Mets, Yanks, Cubs) interested in Miami RHP Edward Cabrera.

The Pirates are interested in Seattle 3B Eugenio Suarez.

Who is left out there?

Big name position players like Bellinger, Bregman, Bichette, Realmuto, and Eugenio Suarez are still out there.

Old Mets favorites like Jose Iglesias, Tomas Nido, Wilmer Flores, Starling Marte, and Michael Conforto are available.

Full MLB list here.

This week’s questions:

1. The Cubs have really stocked up on pitching this year.  Are the Mets done?  Should they step up to get Framber Valdez or Ranger Suarez or Zac Gallen?  Or should they wait out the market?

2. If Mark Vientos is included in a trade package, who is your leading candidate for DH?

3. Griffin Canning was released earlier by the Mets.  Should they consider re-signing him since he is still available?

1. I think the Mets WILL sign one of the top pitching free agents still out there, but only to a last minute, one year deal after said pitcher and his agent realizes that no team is going to give him close to the amount of years he wanted on a contract.

2. don't have one yet... it's that fluid

3. sure... one year with a team option... then consider him for the pen too

3.

I am shocked at Adrian Houser, 2 years, $22 million. Pitchers park helps.

I liked Canning, much to my surprise. If he is healed, and not expensive, why not re-sign him for a year? He is only 7 months out from his Achilles tear and surgery right now, but will he be ready in 3 months? 4 months?

Okamoto contract relatively cheap. Wonder if his Ks catch up to him?

I am wondering if the agent - whom shall not be named - that represents all these pitchers and certainly wants options outs after every year, will make the Mets say, “been there, done that”. We aren’t absorbing all the risk.

2. There is no Plan B to DH.

3. Griffin Canning was figured out before he got hurt. Let him go

1. Mets will aign or acquire a more durable starter

2. Excess OF depth (yet to be acquired) & some Polanco (maybe trade Manaea for Christian walker?)

3. Agree with Gus, he was fading fast. That ship has sailed

That is probably appropriate, because the young arms coming up will probably yield a suitable replacement in a year.

I would definitely grab Canning. He could be a one year filler without the huge salary.

That is probably why the FA market is stalled right now. Lots of clubs are balking at the terms.

Gus, you may finally get your wish. Maybe Mauricio can be LH DH if Vientos gets traded.

I just checked the available pitchers list and it seems like there are a hand full of similar second tier similar pitchers available. Mets will wait it out and offer a 1 year deal.

As for the outfield, I know they mentioned Hayes but to me he is really a PT player. Here's a crazy thought. How about Conforto on a very low, incentive laden 1 year deal....i'm talking close to league minimum.

I believe the Mets will wait out the market and sign one of the top tier players to an Alonso style contract. The only kink in my thinking is that the Mets don't want to lose any more draft picks.

Mack,
Do they sign one of the top pitchers for one year if they are required to give up draft choices and international money? Is that feasible?

Tom Brennan said...

But…the Mets used 46 pitchers last year. The Mets will need a long conga line of pitchers this year. Guaranteed.

Gus, we thought Yo Adrian Houser was figured out too - but he signs for 2/$22? I guess he wasn’t firgured out.
