Mack is pretty confident that what you see is likely what you’re going to get and 2026 is a transition/practice year to line up for competitive play in 2027. That conclusion is a valid one but as the rose-colored glasses wearing friends keep telling me, it’s still six weeks to Spring Training while it is entirely possible a lot of things can happen between now and then.
First of all, let’s take a look briefly at the well known needs. The Mets may or may not be done at first base with Jorge Polanco and/or Mark Vientos. They now have Marcus Semien at age 35 playing second base. Superstar Francisco Lindor returns to play shortstop and the mighty optimists believe that Brett Baty is the 26 year old answer to man third. Francisco Alvarez hopefully with healthy hands returns behind the plate. Juan Soto hits very well and tries hard not to embarrass himself in right field.
For now the center field and left field positions are very much up in the air. Everyone this side of former a Milwaukee Brewers executive respects Tyrone Taylor as a 4th or 5th outfielder but not as a starter. Currently there is no one slated for left field at all.
On the pitching side of things it’s pretty grim. How many of you remember the early season injuries or late season necessity to promote not one, not two but three minor leaguers out of both desperation and need when the known starting rotation imploded? The plan going into 2026 right now includes that same starting rotation the Mets used in the middle of the year. You have in no particular order Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Clay Holmes and the only successful September call-up, Nolan McLean. Everyone seems to like the latter two options but have serious questions about the first three. Not a single starting pitcher has been added to the mix.
In the bullpen things are better than they were last year is indeed everyone is healthy and performs as expected. Devin Williams had a highly forgettable 2025 season but was certainly among the best in the game for his entire career before that. A.J. Minter is a formidable pitcher who hopefully is ready to pitch regularly. Brooks Raley when healthy has been a great player for the Mets. The latter day Luke Weaver posted decent numbers for the Yankees while being horrific prior to that. Huascar Brazoban may be the pitcher he was with the Marlins or he could continue to be the same as he’s been with the Mets. The remaining few slots are AAAA players who could get innings in blowouts but not likely to make significant contributions.
So who’s still out there in free agency that could provide notable contributions to scoring runs? Again in no particular order:
- Cody Bellinger
- Kyle Tucker
- Luis Arraez
- Bo Bichette
- Alex Bregman
- Eugenio Suarez
- Harrison Bader
- Marcell Ozuna
On the pitching side of the equation there are many options if you feel like digging deep into your pockets to pay for what might or might not make sense:
- Framber Valdez
- Ranger Suárez
- Nick Martinez
- Chris Bassitt
- Zac Gallen
- Zack Littell
- Patrick Corbin
- Erick Fedde
- Justin Verlander
- David Robertson
- Jakob Junis
- Tyler Kinley
Yeah, trades are going to have to be made.

The good thing is spring training is no longer months away. It is weeks away. Action is needed quickly now.
of course, we had the JD Martinez scenario in 2024. He was signed very late in spring training, only to find that he had more aches and maladies than a certain 72 year old I know well.
Now that it is 2026, Stearns is "on the clock". Maybe he believes, as it happened with Martinez, that prices of remaining guys will drop a lot. If there is delay into March in a few key signings, we will see more of exactly how ready kids are for the majors with increased spring playing time.
Nick the Quick Morabito, for example, did not get to AAA in 2025, but had a terrific Fall League. Is he possibly already ready for OF 4 or OF 5?
Just look again at the HUGE list of talented free agents again...
I'll wait...
Now, tell me you don't think this delay is being orchestrated by the agents, not POBO's or GMs.
The dam will break when Boras & Co. breaks it
Tucker likely has a market price that triggers the Mets to take action: 5 years $175-185M with opt out after year 2 or 3 & Mets option to extend???
Trade for a younger starter that is established with upside (Cabrera?).
Stearns will NOT set the market for anyone this year - he will let the market come to him.
I shop a lot at Shop Rite. So should Stearns.
Coming to a Flushing stadium this June... Sproat, Tong, Scott, Ross, Benge, Williams...
Sing Sam & Dave...
"HOLD ON... I'M COMIN'... HOLD ON... I'M COMIN'"
June is the real offseason for the Mets. Or at least offseason - part 2
What would you guys say to a Manaea for Giancarlo Stanton trade.
The money is equally owed over the next 2 years, and he did hit 24 hrs last year?
I would do it but do you think the Yankees would?
Also I have been warming up to the idea of Eugenio Suarez on a 2 year deal for $45 mil and then put Baty in a trade for a starting pitcher.
Do you honestly think after everybody the
Mets have scooped up ex-Yanks that they would trade with them right now?
Hey this is someone they been trying to unload for years now? So there might be a chance?
Giancarlo laughed so he hard at the suggested trade that he pulled his hamstring and threw out his back. Adonis is so fragile.
Hold your panic in guys.
I like suarez as a 2 year deal but i would keep baty and have suarez flip flop 1B / DH.
Free agency has some nice pieces that fit well with the Mets. Austin Hays would be a perfect two year contract but is he really better than Taylor? Bader wants two years too…
Aren’t most of these guys Boras clients? I am coming around to Ranger Suarez, but he wouldn’t like my offer and I suppose that would be a problem…
The key to this off-season is knowing the health and quality of Manaea and Senga. If they are closer to their ceiling, the Mets are ok. If they aren’t, they need one of these guys.
In The Athletic today, Britton and Sammon answer some questions from Mets fans. The gist of these answers:
1. The Mets are comfortable with the upside of their pitching staff.
2. The Mets view their middle infielders as starters and reserves. There is no overlap.
3. Cohen cares, but lets Stearns do his job. Also, it was his wife who was a lifelong Mets fan not him. He was a Yankees fan.
4. The Mets are looking at this winter’s free agents with an eye to next winter’s free agents.
5. The issues in the clubhouse were overstated.
