John From Albany - Mets News and Breakfast Links 2/12/2021

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday to Todd Frazier, Lenny Randle, and Guillermo Granadillo. More talk about Kris Bryant, Mets DFA Brad Brach,  and Brandon Nimmo is the first in PSL.

Mets Links:

SNY.TV: Latest on Mets target Kris Bryant: Cubs would 'need to be convinced' to trade him.

SNY.TV: Here's the kind of package Mets should be willing to trade for Kris Bryant. Danny Abriano suggests Mark Vientos, J.D. Davis, and one other prospect…plus: “If the Cubs want an additional prospect, the Mets should insist on Chicago taking back Jeurys Familia and a large chunk of the $11 million he's owed this season.”

MLB.com: Surprise 3B emerges in Mets' search: The Mets have been linked to several third basemen on the trade market, including the Cubs' Kris Bryant, the Reds' Eugenio Suárez, and now, the Athletics' Matt Chapman

SNY.TV: Mets' Marcus Stroman says he's added some Jacob deGrom-inspired tweaks to his delivery. “’deGrom’s got the best mechanics, I tell anybody, and a lot of it’s his body, how much of an athlete he is. A lot of it is also physical and what he was born with,’ Stroman said.”

SNY.TV: Keith Hernandez: 'This is the best offseason I’ve seen the Mets have since I can remember'. Mets have acquired Francisco Lindor, Carlos Carrasco, Trevor May, and James McCann.

MLB.com: 30 prospects who could be stars by 2023. For the Mets: Francisco Alvarez, C. “He already can get to his plus-plus raw power in games, showing an innate ability to drive the ball out of the park from line to line.”

MLB.com: Who'll win the NL East? Experts weigh in. All 5 MLB.com writers pick the Braves to win the division.  3 have the Mets in 2nd, 2 3rd

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Mets can’t afford repeat of Pete Alonso’s sophomore slump. “’He’s the one guy you look at on this team, you sometimes stare at him in the cage because he’s so talented,’ Michael Conforto said of Alonso last September. ‘I don’t think any of us ever worries about Pete. Pete will be fine.’”

SNY.TV: Get to know new Mets outfield prospect Khalil Lee. “…he gives the Mets a young, speedy outfield prospect who could potentially be big league ready either this season or the next. He has the tools to play center field, but as MLB.com notes, he may project better as a right fielder because of his strong arm. The Mets could look at Lee as a potential fourth or fifth outfielder who could also be used in late-game scenarios as a pinch runner.”

90 Percent Mets: I’ve Talked Myself Into James Paxton. “Signing Paxton and expecting him to take the ball every fifth day and give you 200 innings would be a mistake...Giving him a one year deal when we have legitimate depth behind him? Now, that’s an idea…Either, he is going to be healthy or he isn’t. And when he’s healthy, he’s great.”

"Doris From Rego Park" makes its debut on Jonathan Schwartz's weekend program on WNYC-FM. The song, written and performed by Don Rosler, is a tribute to Doris Bauer, the Mets fan who became a New York institution as a late-night caller to WFAN sports radio before she died in 2003.

Jenrry Mejia becomes the first player to receive a lifetime ban for three failed tests for performance-enhancing substances, after testing positive for boldenone, a steroid used in horse racing. The 26 year-old Mets former closer claims that he only failed one test, states the second sets of results to be inaccurate, and believes that MLB fabricated the latest violation to remove him from the sport.

  1. Somehow, Jennry Mejia always shows up in a post - nothing like a pitcher with 3 strikes.

I agree with Keith - best off season I can ever remember, even without signing one of the "Big 3" free agents.

Nimmo focused on his CF play, so with his offense, I don't mind him starting most games out there.

Like the thought of Alvarez debuting in 2023.

Bryant? I dunno. Having JDD and the back ups the team now has (e.g. Villar) is workable for me. Keep Vientos unless you think he will plateau. Prospects are worth more as they get closer to the big leagues. Just think Kelenic.

  2. Not thrilled with Bryant. But Matt Chapman makes me hyperventilate a little. Get Oakland to include Laureano in the deal, too. Billy Beane would fleece our farm system. That would be my biggest concern.

  3. For Chapman and Laureano I would give Oakland some of our top prospects like Mauricio and Vientos.

  4. Now Chapman is a guy that opens the Alonso trade chatter. I would definitely be talking about that.

I don't think the Mets have enough prospects for Beane to trade both Chapman and Laureano.

  5. Alonso for Chapman and Laureano - wow...that would be a blockbuster.

  6. Wow, poor JD Davis. Talk about not being loved...

On Khalil Lee, trying to see where he fits on a Mets prospect list. On Prospects 1500, they list Lee as a Tier 2 prospect (not a MVP type, but sporadic all-star) on the Royals list. On the Mets, the only two Tier 2 guys are Mauricio and Alvarez - no Tier 1’s :-( So, it looks like he would go in front of Allen and PCA as the #3 prospect in our system (he was #9 on KC’s). That sounds about right. The KC writer for the site grilled the Royals for giving up on him.

  7. If we are making big deals, get me a CF ans stop acting like Davis/Guillorme/Villar is more of a problem than Smith in LF. Third base isn’t as big a deal.

  8. Gus, I agree, outfield defense is a bigger problem than Davis at third.

If there is any fire to the smoke of Chapman, the solution would be to work out some type of Alonso for Chapman deal, sign Bradley, move Nimmo to left, Smith to first, and now you have a pretty first rate defense all over.
