Mack's spin -
I love big powerful outfielders and Fabian is the best in this draft.
Some are concerned with his .250-BA and K/9 ratio through last year but I'm not. He enrolled early and will only improve with age.
I expect him to have a banner 2021.
Probably doesn't stick in center and winds up in right.

Player of the Year: Jud Fabian, OF, Florida.
Fabian can impact the game in every facet and was voted a unanimous first-team Preseason All-American by major league scouting directors. He’s a talented center fielder and has impressive all-around tools at the plate. He hit .294/.407/.603 last spring and 11 of his 20 hits went for extra bases, including five home runs. If he has the kind of season that leads him to be a top 5-10 draft pick, it’ll go a long way to helping the Gators.

Areas To Improve: Cut down on swing and miss, handle breaking stuff, hit for higher average
Fabian will get points for being one of the younger players in the class and he is one of the rare college center fielders with the power/speed tools combination. Still, there are real hit tool and swing-and-miss questions he’ll need to answer this spring after hitting .250/.368/.466 with a 21.8% strikeout rate in 288 plate appearances. He’s shown an ability to handle premium velocity, but some scouts noticed he struggled against breaking stuff when opposing pitchers adjusted to him. Making that adjustment himself to avoid being exposed will be another factor scouts are watching.

Texas Rangers
Jud Fabian
OF, Florida
Many feel that Fabian is the best all-around position player in the draft, and the sort of potential everyday star the Rangers system lacks. The Florida star can excel in all areas of the game but his combination of power and feel to hit give him the upside of an everyday above average right fielder. With lots of draft capital invested in pitching in recent years the Texas organization would be smart to take the easy money here. One of the few established college stars with a track record against high level competition. Swing and miss remains one of the sole question marks surrounding Fabian's bat, but even that was reportedly improved this fall. He's one of the few 5-tool potential players in the class.

Jud Fabian
Florida OF
Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 195 | B-T: R-L
Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age At Draft: 20.8
After graduating high school and enrolling at Florida early, Fabian will be one of the youngest players in the 2021 college class and still just 20 on draft day. A 6-foot-2, 195-pound outfielder, Fabian was an everyday player for the Gators in his freshman season in 2019 but had his true coming out party on the Cape the following summer. With Bourne, Fabian hit .290/.350/.500 with six home runs and showed his power could translate to a wood bat. A balanced and strong hitter from the right side, Fabian came into college with an ability to hit fastballs right away but had an adjustment period when opposing pitchers started attacking him with a steady diet of breaking stuff. While he does rack up a few strikeouts (63 strikeouts in 73 games with Florida), Fabian has the all-fields power and on-base skills to go along with those whiffs. Defensively, Fabian is an instinctual fielder who reads the ball off the bat well and takes solid routes in center field with above-average running ability.

Outfield - Jud Fabian, Florida
One of the top position players in the sport, Fabian is a true superstar at the college level who’s in store for a monster 2021 campaign. Fabian enrolled early to play in 2019 where he started as an 18-year-old freshman in the SEC, then he put together impressive performances on the Cape and in the abbreviated 2020 season. The power was beginning to show up in a big way with five home runs in just four weeks and adding power to an already impressive profile when you look at his speed and center field defense makes for a complete prospect.

3. Detroit Tigers: Jud Fabian, OF, Florida
Fabian enrolled at Florida early in 2019, removing himself from that year’s draft. Now three years later, Fabian is one of the top players in the 2021 MLB draft class. He has five-tool potential and will stick in center field long-term. He worked on refining his plate discipline this offseason, he told BPJ.

Kansas City Royals:
Much like the combine warriors of the NBA and NFL, there exists summer league standouts in baseball, those who do okay or struggle during collegiate competition but absolutely demolish wood bat play. Jud Fabian is one of those summer league standouts, having shown a capability to hit in the Cape Cod League and the Florida League. While his sophomore year did show that he was adjusting better thanks to increased power, his junior year will be the determining factor as to whether he is the top outfielder in the class. Fabian’s calling card is his power, he’s otherwise average to above average across the board. The Royals have dipped into the Gator pool before, taking Brady Singer and Jackson Kowar in 2018, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility for them to go back.

2021: No. 8 | 2019: Enrolled early
Then: Fabian stood out on the showcase circuit and might have factored in the top two rounds of the 2019 Draft had he not bypassed his senior season to enroll early at Florida. He had obvious hitting ability, impressive power potential, solid to plus speed and the instincts to handle center field.
Now: One of the younger college players in the 2021 Draft, Fabian won't turn 21 until more than two months after he gets selected. He might have the most usable power in the class, though it comes with heightened swing-and-miss concerns as he has transformed into more slugger than hitter. He still moves well and plays a fine center field.

Jud Fabian, OF (draft eligible in 2021): The Gators are loaded, but Fabian’s 5-tool mix, relative youth, and established track record rocket him past his teammates.

3. Detroit Tigers: Jud Fabian, OF, Florida
It’s not a year deep in college bats, but the college hitters generally rise to the top of the board. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound outfielder struggled some as a freshman, but was stellar with wood bats since and even hit six homers playing in the Cape Cod League. He has above-average speed and should stay in center field long-term. Fabian throws with his left and hits right-handed, which is a bit unusual. He should be in the running for first college hitter off the board in July.

Q - Who's the most volatile player in your top 10? up or down?
Jim Callis: I'm going to say Florida outfielder Jud Fabian. Some teams think he's the best college position player available, others worry about the .250 average in two years at Florida and the swing and miss.

4. Red Sox: Jud Fabian, OF, Florida
Fabian might be the most polarizing prospect among the eight players who seem to have separated themselves from the rest of the Draft class at this point. He could have the most usable power in the Draft and may stay in center field, but he also has hit just .250 with a 22-percent strikeout rate in two seasons at Florida.

1. Jud Fabian, OF, Florida: Simply put, Fabian checks all the boxes—he’s uncommonly young for his class, posted a .290/.350/.500 slash line in 137 PAs as an 18-year-old in the Cape Cod League, and doesn’t have a tool under 55. Comps range from Mitch Haniger to a young Kevin McReynolds to Ryan Braun.
Fabian's hitting concerns me - I want a virtual sure thing in the first round - I just wonder if he'll have a hole in his bat at high professional levels.
ReplyDeleteI see him differenly.
DeleteI belive he will go lights out this season and return to a top 5 pick.
Part of the intrigue of the draft. If he does kill it, he will climb. Clearly a real athlete.
