Scouting Report - Mack Pick 1.5 - RHP - Jack Leiter

Jack Leiter

Mack's spin -

You have to give credit to someone that turns down a four million dollar signing bonus from the Yankees.

People that commit to Vanderbilt usually go on to to play  there. Leiter did to become the Saturday starter behind Kumar Rocker.

Most of the mock world has placed him in the 1.2 slot right behind his teammate. I never have. Yes, he has five good pitches, but the velocity just isn't there on his fastball.

Is he still the 2nd top pitcher in this draft?

Yes.

Areas To Improve: Fastball velocity, better command, refined changeup, start full season

Many of the college pitchers around Leiter throw harder than him, so for many teams an improved top-end fastball will elevate his profile. Additionally, Leiter didn’t quite live up to his high school reputation as an advanced strike-thrower, with eight walks (4.6 walks per nine) in 15.2 innings, so showing better command in 2021 will also help. Starting over a full season and refining his changeup are other keys that scouts have mentioned. Leiter’s 15.2 collegiate innings are fewer than any other arm on this list.

Jack Leiter

RHP, Vanderbilt

Another famous Commodore righty, many tagged Leiter as the presumptive no. 2 overall pick in this cycle, and that's still very possible. As it stands, we have Leiter falling to Baltimore where he'll pair nicely with young arms in Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall. The Orioles front office has shown an affinity for big data when it comes to their preferred ballplayers. Leiter possesses plus fastball with plenty of ride, as well as two breaking balls and a changeup, all of which have flashed above average or better in his brief stint on campus. He'll be a very popular watch in 2021 and has just as much upside as anyone at the top of this class.

Commit/Drafted: Yankees 2019 (20)

Age At Draft: 21.2

Leiter was a clear first-round talent coming out of high school in 2019—ranking No. 21 on the BA 500—but a high asking price and strong Vanderbilt commitment meant he made it to campus. While Leiter only pitched four games and 15.2 innings with the Commodores, he seemed to increase his draft stock in that time by showing his stuff could easily play at the college level. He struck out 22 batters and walked eight, posting a 1.72 ERA. Leiter is an advanced arm with exceptional feel for what he’s doing on the mound, which should be no surprise considering his father is former major league pitcher Al Leiter. The 6 feet, 195-pound righty has an above-average fastball that gets into the mid 90s at its best, and he throws both four- and two-seam variations. On top of that, Leiter has a big, downer curveball with a high spin rate that projects as a plus offering, in addition to a slider and changeup that round out his repertoire.

4. Boston Red Sox: Jack Leiter, RHP, Vanderbilt

Some professional scouts believe Leiter is a better pro prospect than his Vanderbilt teammate Kumar Rocker. He wanted to attend Vanderbilt out of high school instead of starting a pro career in 2019.

Leiter has a clean delivery, mid-90s fastball, and a really good curveball. The righty also flashes potential with his slider and changeup. He has an exceptional feel for pitching, which partly has to do with learning the craft from former MLB pitcher and his father Al Leiter.

Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles may still have a ways to go in terms of shedding the dysfunctional franchise label, but at the very least their drafting has shown some degree of competency. With two Tier 1 college arms still on the board, it comes down to projectability vs. pedigree. And if he happens to still be available here, it’s hard to imagine the Orioles passing on Jack Leiter with the 5th pick. Leiter had an impressive debut for Vanderbilt while pitching behind Kumar Rocker, and when COVID shut down the season left scouts and fans wanting more. Leiter holds the advantage from an arsenal perspective, but he does need to work on his control. He may not have the desirable build, but Leiter has shown he can definitely compete and has his father’s bulldog mentality on the mound.

Then: "From a velocity standpoint, Leiter often utilizes an average fastball, thrown in the 91-92 mph range, though he can go get 94-95 mph when he needs it. It plays up because he throws it with some sink and has outstanding command of the pitch. He has shown distinct breaking balls in the past, though he's been leaning on the curve more frequently this spring, and it was a true knee-buckling out pitch during his NHSI win."

Now: Leiter reportedly rejected $4 million offers in the 2019 Draft, causing him to slide to the Yankees in the 20th round. His college career consists of just 15 2/3 innings in the truncated 2020 season, so he hasn't been seen much since high school. He worked at 94-97 mph during fall practice and continues to show advanced feel for spin, though he hasn't used his changeup much and his control has been inconsistent at Vanderbilt.

4. Boston Red Sox: Jack Leiter, RHP, Vanderbilt

Leiter honored his commitment to Vanderbilt instead of going pro in 2018 and it’ll pay off for him with a bigger bonus in the end. This redshirt sophomore doesn’t have a huge track record, but possesses obvious physical bloodlines. The 6-foot righty comes with that stigma attached, but his fastball sat in the 94-97 mph range recently to go along with a plus curveball.

Jack Leiter, RHP (2021): Of course many people would like to see Kumar Rocker here, but Leiter’s superior command and better fastball metrics give him the nod . . . by a nose.

7. Royals: Jack Leiter, RHP, Vanderbilt

There's no shortage of scouts who prefer Leiter to his Vanderbilt teammate because they think he has a deeper repertoire, better delivery and more feel for pitching than Rocker. Draft-eligible as a second-year collegian because he'll turn 21 in April, he's small for a starter at 6 feet and 195 pounds, but could climb higher than this if he improves his control after walking eight in 15 2/3 innings last spring.

2. Jack Leiter, RHP, Vanderbilt: A draft eligible sophomore whose freshman season was interrupted by COVID-19, Leiter won’t be able to equal the lengthy track record of many of his peers, but that won’t matter. He has superb command of five plus pitches, including a fastball that can reach 97 MPH, and flawless mechanics.

34. Malakhi Knight, OF, Archbishop Murphy (Wash.)

Like they did this past summer, the Orioles go with a college player with their top pick in this mock in choosing right-hander Jack Leiter who had an impressive start to a freshman campaign for the Commodores. Showing low to mid-90s on a quality fastball alongside three secondary offerings that have a chance to be above average or better at the next level, Leiter shows one of the cleanest operations of any arm in the class. Malakhi Knight in the second gives them a well-rounded prep athlete with tremendous upside on both sides of the ball. He’s a 6.6 runner and it plays into his abilities in the outfield to go with the big power potential/hit tool combo in the bat. -Tyler Russo

Sakowski's Take: As things sit right now, Leiter at 1:5 would be a value match, and the Orioles under Mike Elias have established that they will take more analytic-heavy arms, which Leiter certainly is. Slated to pitch behind Kumar Rocker in the Vandy rotation, Leiter will definitely have the chance to prove he’s a top 5 talent this spring. Knight represents more of a long-term bet as a prep bat, but he performed all summer and has middle-order tools along with a non-zero chance to play center long term.
