Thoughts
I think I saw the beginning of the development of the 2027 Mets bullpen.
Monday brought a wonderful start by Nolan McLean (6-IP, 1-ER), but the highlight for me was the three scoreless innings tossed by Jonathan Pintaro, Nate Lavender, and Daniel Duarte… combined 3.0-IP, 1-H, 0-R, 1-BB, 2-K. Add to this existing 2027 contracts Kodai Senga and Devin Williams and you now have five potential members of the 2027 pen. The return of both Tylor Megill and Reed Garrett off the IL move this number up to seven, leaving Tobias Meyers, Dedniel Nunez, and Austin Warren to flght it out for slot #8.

Minor Tidbits
It is getting harder, as the season begins to wind down, to determine which starting pitchers in the chain are ready to help Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, and Zac Thornton in the 2027 starting rotation. A scouting friend of mine currently has McLean, at best being an SP-2 candidate, mainly due to his on-again, off-again dominance this year. “He just can’t seem to get this number of pitches thrown thing down this year” was the actual text sent me. As for Scott, he has him in the SP-3/4 range and Thornton, at best an SP/5.
So, my question to you… after watching the piss poor performances by Jonah Tong and Jack Wenninger, throw in the same kind of review for Jonathan Santucci, the failure of both Tobias Myers and Dakota Hawkins, and all other prospect starters being, at least one affiliate away… what are your suggestions going forward???
The Amick/Brennan debate continues… Tom is stuck on who should be accredited with being the Met minor leaguer with the most home runs. 1B Billy Amick/AA-Binghamton is now up to 7-Mets homers in 46 at-bats… but he came to the Mets from another AA team, where he hit 23 home runs also this season. When asked the question, Tom does not give Amick for having the most. Me? Amick has 30 AA home runs this year which “leads” the Mets. So, I ask you… what Met minor leaguer has the most home runs this season?
And… why is someone that has hit 30 AA home runs and 94-RBI this season still playing at this level?
Well, the bottom line is the fact that this debate is now over. Amick was promoted to AAA-Syracuse before the start of this week’s games.
Simply put, you can’t get excited with the stat-lines of the
DSL bats because the pitching at that level is so undeveloped. And yet, there
is 19/yr old DSL-Orange SP Abner Meza. On
this past Friday, Meza went 5.0-IP, 1-H, 0-ER, 4-K, raising his seasonal stat
line to 11-G, 5-2, 1.81, 0.97, 49.2-IP, 50-K. This raised his 2/yr. DSL line to
23-G, 9-5, 2.24, 1.04, 88.1-IP, 82-K. So I ask… why isn’t this hombre eating
dinner at Duffy’s tonight?
Jefferson Rojas. Mitch
Voit. Elian Pena. Jacob Reimer. Sammy
Stafura. Emilien Pitre. Wandy Asigen. This is far too many infielders for
the future Flushing infield. Let’s remember, Francisco Lindor is going to play one of
these three infield positions. Let’s say 2027 is an experimental year. So I ask
you… what two of seven players I listed above will be in the starting 2028
infield? Me? Have no friggin idea.
So, what is the Mets going to do about AAA-Syracuse 1B/OF Ryan Clifford?
He finished off last week 0-9, 8-K, which created a 1-14, 26-K stat-line over his last 11 games. If this guy was a racehorse, they would shoot him on the track. The current Syracuse first base situation is Clifford, Nick Lorusso, and Billy Amick. Are we to expect that the homerun hitting crazy guy would be promoted there and sat down, so Clifford could strike out. No way, Jose.
On my team, Amick and Lorusso will split 1B/DH
duties while Clifford is designated for assignment, released, or euthanized… I’ve
made a lot of mistakes in my life, but once I recognize that something was
wrong, I more on and never think about it again. The Cohenstearns Boys need to
do more here than placing him on the DL.
In Closing
I really wanted the Mets to have one of the six worst records
this season, but that just doesn’t seem to be in the picture anymore. To me,
the resurgence has been centered around the steady hitting of Benge/Ewing, the
steady Eddie at-bats of Jared Young, the
resurgence of Francisco Lindor and Bo Bichette, and the return of Sean Manaea and his rotation buddies to being
relevant.
In addition, it’s now exciting to follow the chain,
especially the Binghamton Mets. Just about every move David
Stearns made is proving out to be a good one.
Most field positions have so many future options right now
and my guess is that 2027 will be the only year that all of you have to sweat
the small stuff anymore. There seems to be a kind of ballplayer that is taking
over this team. Kind of player like the
psycho-twins Carson Benge and AJ Ewing. Have you ever seen more fan excitement
for two .260 hitters? Well, .260 in 2026 is a good thing in this game and
expect all future major league additions on this team to be designed in this
mode.

I think the next top prospect wave to majors is more bats than arms. Id guys are traded, i say Tong & Wenninger remain AAA depth again in 2027.
ReplyDeleteAssume Stearns will find a few veterans again to round out bullpen. I swear I forgot Megill & Garrett existed.
Oh, they're still around. Until they won't be. I have 10x more faith in Garrett
DeleteMack, I will comment on your article, but first: “A waterspout formed off the Long Island coast and moved ashore as a small tornado that wreaked havoc on a beach club Thursday evening — damaging cabanas and scattering debris across the sand, insane footage shows. Terrifying video from East Atlantic Beach, Nassau County, shows the massive spout forming near the shoreline and gradually moving inland, tearing through boardwalk businesses before dissolving shortly after landfall around 6:45 p.m.”
ReplyDeleteWow
DeleteBrother's old Beach club is there
What happened to the itsy-bitsy spider that climbed up the water spout?
DeleteMaking the infield picture even more crowded is the recent resurgence of 21 year old Marco Vargas, and Boston Baro, who went 1 for 2 yesterday, and is now 5 for 7 this year. If he is finally healthy, he could quickly throw his hat into the ring. He turns 22 on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteNone of the ones you listed is perhaps ever going to profile as high as Lindor in his prime, but I can see the Mets looking to trade away Lindor in mid-2027 or in the 2027 off season. He is REALLY expensive, And may already be exiting his prime. Kind of like Polanco has.
And so begins the Brennan-Vargas train
DeleteWe all know the term passive-aggressive. Clifford is passive, Amick is aggressive.i looked it up, and Amick is about 7th in HRs in all of the minors this year. All but two of the 7 strike out like him. But he had by far the lowest average of the 7. He needs lowered Ks and more hits.
ReplyDeleteClifford since June 1 was 20 for 177, with 86 Ks. Donald Trump said it is like nothing we have ever seen before. Kidding aside, as bad as the Ks are, he is just 20 for 91 when he didn’t strike out in that stretch.
I moved him out of my Top 100 prospects.
I would just put Clifford in St Lucie (demote him down 3 levels) and tell him that it is up to him to wake up. Final chance.
They used to not be able to do this for minor league players over 24
DeleteIf that rule now in the wind?
They did move Clifford back to the development list so his season is over.
ReplyDeleteNo way I trade our future hall of famer Lindor. They messed his season up by rushing him back to fast from his spring training injury. They should have given him an extra month to heal.
I’m hoping for a 2028 infield of
Lindor- SS
Jefferson Rojas.-1B
Mitch Voit.- 2B
Elian Pena.- 3B
Zozo, I think Pitre 2026 is paralleling early Jeff McNeil. Power, Ks, average, speed. He has to be in there. I think Lindor DH by 2028, if he is not dealt. Lindor has hit better since returning .258 in July, .258 in August). What will he hit in 2028? A question for the fast twitch analysts.
ReplyDeleteI think Soto should be our DH by 2028.
DeleteDefense is so important and hopefully he realizes how many games we are winning with defense since he’s been gone?
Mack,
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the Mets can retain the " bottom 6 draft choice" as long as Seattle, Washington, Pirates, and the Reds keep winning. The Mets need that early choice and no ten place penalty in 2027. But damn it sure is great to see the Mets winning.
l
Mets currently 6th
DeleteNever gonna happen
I agree. But we will know better today. As they switch into a new series, we get updated injury reports. The last update on Soto, on August 14, said “ Ran several wind sprints in the outfield without any problems on Aug. 14. He vows to be back on the field before the season ends.”. Now, another week of healing has passed. Today’s update might conceivably say he is ready to start a rehab next Tuesday, which is August 25. He’d then be back by Sept 1. If you add his bat to the team’s current offense, hard to see them losing enough games.
DeleteAgreed
DeleteGosh, it's great to have so much depth. Not mentioned Vargas, Reimer and Snyder all of whom are trending upward.
ReplyDeleteJohn yesterday evening put up an interview done by Max Goodman with Jonah Tong. In the interview, Tong reveals that he now has five pitches and has been working to master them. I would say that by March, I’d like him to keep the best ones and chuck the rest so he can be in the majors.
ReplyDeleteGus, I partially listened and heard that. I totally agree with you. Get Tong on next year’s roster. If you want that to be successful, call him up in September for more adjustment time.
DeleteKoufax had plenty of adjustments from 1955-1960. Then he turned into KOUFAX. He was allowed to djust on the MLB level.
DeleteI would like Tong to put up pictures of Jonathan Papelbon pitching. Look how deadly serious he was. Tong has to move past his “I’m 22 turning 18, aww shucks” demeanor and GET TOUGHER. Watch the movie Warrior, where the underdog brother HAD to win the tournament, or lose his house to foreclosure. He fought with every fiber of his being. Tong needs that. Badly.
The current bullpen for the Mets has been doing the job, astounding us all. How could we trade away so many quality bullpen arms and maintain or improve upon pen performance?! This makes me wonder if it will last. Some of these guys have been up and down many times. Is it just a good run or a bunch of players that have "figured it out"? Time will tell. It is good to have players in the wings ready to go because injuries and performance issues are waiting to happen.
