Updated: Mets By Position: 2B

The trading of Greg Veloz for Anderson Hernandez is an upgrade for the Mets and takes some pressure off finding a replacement someday for Luis Castillo.

First of all, Hernandez is only 26-years old. Secondly, he plays great defense. And thirdly, he’s fast as hell.

Though he has played many more games at SS, I’m sure the Mets look to him as a backup at both positions. At least, for the remainder of this year.

Castillo has 2010 and 2011 left on a contract no one is bitching about anymore, and Anderson returns to the utility role most people projected him to be at when he was a Met.

Though this trade is a small one, it’s a huge upgrade and eliminates needing to look for one of the 25-man squad for the next 5+ years.

Regarding prospects, the closest thing to a second base prospect in the system would be Kingsport’s Alonzo Harris, who is years away, if ever.

Put to rest second base. It’s Castillo for two more years, Hernandez backing him up, and who the hell cares at this point past that.

Big fish to fry.
