Those numbers are made all the more impressive when you consider Cardullo started with Florida state as a walk-on who only earned 73 at bats through the end of sophomore year. The junior year breakout came completely out of nowhere, but Cardullo has managed to maintain some of the gains (largely those made in his mature, discipline approach at the plate) while still showing just enough of the gap power to keep scouts believing he has enough pop to spend a 15th to 20th round pick on him. I liken him to a less acclaimed version of former teammate Tony Delmonico, 2008 6th round pick of the Dodgers. Delmonico has seen time behind the plate and on the right side of the infield in the minors so far, a path that could be the best hope for Cardullo (who already has some college experience at both first and second) to follow if he wants to someday crack a big league roster. Without sounding too much like a broken record, defensive value through versatility will be a large part of what gets any of the above players to the big leagues. Steady defense at all five defensive spots + professional approach taken to every at bat + gap power + average speed = potential big league utility player.

Achter, Michigan State - Jr., RHP, Oregon, Ohio/Clay - Achter tossed his first career complete-game shutout on Saturday as Michigan State downed Notre Dame, 13-0, in Game 1 of a three-game sweep over the Fighting Irish. The junior struck out nine batters while scattering seven hits and allowing just three walks. Achter faced the minimum in five of his nine innings, improving his season record to 2-0. The right-hander owns a season ERA of 1.83 and is allowing opposing batters to hit at just a .222 clip. The weekly honor is the first of Achter’s career and the second for a Spartan pitcher this season.

Martinson helped Texas State claim its second Southland Conference series of the season by winning two of three games at Sam Houston State. The junior from Hurst, Texas (Grapevine), hit for the cycle in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday. He doubled in the second inning to break open a 1-1 tie and delivered a two-run home run in the ninth to lift the Bobcats to a 9-8 victory. In the second game of the doubleheader, he was 2-for-3 and drove in two more runs. Martinson batted .471 in four games last week, which also included a 13-7 win at Texas Tech. For the week, he had two doubles, a triple and a home run, scored five times and drove in five runs.

The Scottsdale, Ariz. native tallied four multi-RBI games and three multi-hit contests while posting a 1.063 slugging percentage and a .611 on-base mark. Bailey went 7-for-11 with two homers, two doubles and six RBI in the three-game series at No. 2 Texas. He opened the week with a 2-for-5 effort and a pair of RBI against South Dakota State on Tuesday. At UT, the senior outfielder compiled three hits, including a homer, two RBI and two runs scored in NU’s 6-5 loss on Friday. The home run was the first allowed by UT’s Taylor Jungmann. Bailey guided Nebraska to a 5-3 victory over Texas on Saturday, going 1-for-3 with a game-tying two-run homer.
