LAST GAME: Up until Friday night, the bullpen had been practically
spotless, however, three relievers combined to blow a 5-
0 lead in the eighth inning allowing New Hampshire to overtake
the B-Mets 7-5. Starter Mike Antonini impressed facing
one over the minimum through seven innings before putting
the first two men of the eighth on base with a single and a
walk. The inning unraveled from there. Five straight would
reach after Antonini left as Jose De La Torre issued a pair of
walks and a hit before passing the ball to Derrick Ellison, who
allowed two more to reach before he induced a sac fly off theb
at of Eric Thames that marked out No. 1. However, the Fisher
Cats had reeled off six runs already and would pick up another
on a wild pitch by Josh Stinson, the fourth pitcher of the
inning. Kirk Nieuwenhuis was a bright spot at the plate with a
triple and a homer with three RBI.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Eddie Kunz will make his
sixth start of the year this afternoon. The converted reliever is
coming off the best start of his career, May 3 at Erie where he
fired six innings and allowed two runs, one earned. Kunz
struck out a career-high seven and failed to walk a hitter for
the first time. He is 2-2 with a 6.94 ERA in 23.1 innings in
2010. Last year, Kunz made 40 appearances for Buffalo (AAA)
with a 4-5 mark and a 5.02 ERA in 61 innings. He functioned
as the B-Mets closer in 2008 when he racked up 27 saves.
The righty was taken by the Mets in the second round (42nd
overall) in the 2007 draft.
RHP Bobby Bell will take the ball for the Fisher Cats in the
middle game of the series. He tossed a season-low, four innings
in his last go around, May 3 versus New Britain. Bell
allowed six runs, three earned, on eight hits in the short start.
On the season, the righty is 2-1 with a 6.12 ERA in 25 innings.
Bell spent 2009 with Dunedin (High-A) where he appeared in
42 games, 10 starts, with a 2.43 ERA in 96.1 innings with
112 strikeouts and a 4-1 record. He was an 18th round
choice in 2008 out of Rice University by Toronto.
LEADING OFF: Centerfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis led of Friday
night’s game for Binghamton with a solo homer to left-center
off Zach Stewart. It was the second time he has led off a
game with a homer this season. He also accomplished the
feat April 10 versus Akron.
