From Press Release:
The Savannah Sand Gnats (18-9) outlasted the Delmarva Shorebirds 1-0 Wednesday night in 12 innings at Arthur Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD. The Gnats remain two games in front of the Augusta GreenJackets who beat the Greenville Drive 6-0 Wednesday.
In the 12th, the Gnats scored the game's only run, but it cost the team a player. Savannah loaded the bases with no one out after Sam Honeck doubled, Jefry Marte reached on a fielder's choice and Kai Gronauer was hit by a pitch. The next batter, Cesar Puello grounded out to third, and Honeck, the lead runner was cut down at the plate. After a violent collision, Honeck was taken off the field in an ambulance. Pinch-hitter Dock Doyle then brought home Marte with the game's only run with an infield ground out to give Savannah a 1-0 lead.
LHP Mark Cohoon started in place of LHP Jimmy Fuller and became the first Gnat pitcher to throw nine innings in a game. He struck out seven, walked one and gave up just four singles while lowering his ERA to 1.62. After John Church kept the game scoreless in the tenth and eleventh innings, Michael Powers picked up his fifth save in the 12th.
The Gnats and Shorebirds finish up their four-game series Thursday at 7:05 pm. The radio broadcast will begin on News/Talk 630 and www.sandgnats.com at 7 pm.
Savannah returns home on Wednesday, May 12th to take on the Rome Braves in a four-game series. For tickets and more information, please call (912) 351-9150.
