LAST GAME: The B-Mets are making come-from-behind wins a
habit as they overcame an early 3-0 deficit to win 11-6 over
Akron Saturday night. Binghamton has now won three straight
games in come-from-behind fashion. Mark Cohoon notched
the win his Double-A debut despite permitting five runs on a
season-high 11 hits over 5.2 innings. Scott Barnes was not as
fortunate for Akron. The southpaw was hung with the loss
after allowing nine runs, five of which were earned, over fourplus
innings. Nick Evans led the B-Mets 14-hit attack with a
four-hit showing. All four were extra-base hits, including three
doubles and a homer. Evans scored three runs and drove in
two. Raul Reyes also recorded a huge night with three hits,
two of which were homers, and three RBI. Jerad Head provided
the big day for the Aeros, who also managed 14 hits.
Head was a perfect 4-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Jenrry Mejia will make
his second Double-A start of 2010 on three days rest. He
hurled 2.1 innings of one-run ball against New Britain June 23
at NYSEG Stadium last time out. The 20-year-old righty appeared
in 30 games out of the bullpen for New York (NL) and
recorded a 3.25 ERA over 27.2 innings. Mejia made 10 starts
for Binghamton last season and was winless with an 0-5 mark
and a 4.47 ERA over 10 starts spanning 44.1 innings. The
Santo Domingo, DR native is a member of the Mets’ 40-man
roster and was signed as a non-drafted free agent April 4,
2007.
LHP Kelvin De La Cruz will try to prevent Akron from being
swept with his 10th start with the Aeros. He took the loss in
his last outing after tossing five innings of four-run work versus
Richmond June 22 at Canal park. De La Cruz is 1-4 with a
5.61 ERA over 43.1 innings with 30 walks. He opened the
year in Kinston’s (High-A) rotation and went 2-2 with a 2.91
ERA in six starts spanning 34 innings. De La Cruz made just
five starts last year due to a strained ligament in his throwing
elbow. He is considered the No. 13 prospect in the Indians
system by Baseball America.
