The Princeton Rays lost an early three-run lead and a solo homerun yielded to Chase Greene in the sixth put the cap on a 6-4 victory for the Kingsport Mets in the first game of the teams' three-game series tonight, July 26, at Hunnicutt Field.
The P-Rays started the scoring in the first inning when rightfielder Kevin Kiermaier hit a leadoff single to centerfield, immediately followed by an RBI triple that centerfielder Todd Glaesmann hammered to the rightfield corner on a full count. Two batters later, Princeton catcher Alejandro Segovia roped the first offering of Kingsport starting pitcher Jacob DeGrom to centerfield, allowing Glaesmann to score and putting the Rays up 2-0. In the second inning Kevin Kiermaier hit an RBI triple to deep centerfield scoring first baseman Jeff Malm who had reached on a one out single to centerfield, giving the Rays a 3-0 lead.
Braulio Lara started the game on the mound for Princeton and cruised through the first three innings, allowing only one run before he ran into trouble in the fourth inning. Javier Rodriguez led off the inning with a double to put a runner in scoring position. Lara then struck out the next two batters, with the third batter hitting a routine ground ball back to him for what would have been the third out. Lara threw it past Rays first baseman Jeff Malm though, allowing Charlie Hinojosa to reach second and Rodriguez to score. A throwing error by Alejandro Segovia allowed Hinojosa to score and back-to-back hits by Greene and Ray Van Gurp put the Mets up 4-3 over the Rays in the top of the fourth. Lara who pitched four innings, was given the no decision and allowed four runs on five hits, with only one of them earned.
The P-Rays battled back in the home half of the fourth, tying the score up at four-all after Jeff Malm smacked a double to the rightfield corner to score leftfielder Cesar Guillen, who had hit a one out double to get into scoring position.
The Mets added on another run in the fifth inning when Mets first baseman Lucas Stewart reached on a one out single and scored on a throwing error to put the Mets up 5-4. In the sixth inning Greene hit a solo homerun to put Kingsport up 6-4 and capping a 3-for-5 night for Greene, who also hit two doubles. George Jensen came in to relieve Lara in the fifth and was issued the loss after pitching four innings and allowing two runs on four hits.
The Mets pitching staff was stellar after the fifth inning, posting zeroes in the hits and runs column against the Princeton hitters. In the fifth inning Hunter Carnevale came in for relief and was given the win for the Mets. In three innings of work Carnevale no hit the Rays, walking only two and striking out six.
