Continuing our prospect slotting…
56. OF Matt den Dekker – 23/yrs. old - I started out thinking that den Dekker would be higher up the chain than this, but the fact is he played 2010 way above his projected ability. This isn’t saying he’s overrated. It is; however correct to say that guys like Darrell Ceciliani, Cesar Puello, and Cory Vaughn, are, prospect wise, more qualified to be on this list first. Either way, D.D. will move on to Lucy to play in an all-star outfield which will eventually answer the question, who gets center, he or Darrell?
2011: St. Lucie
2012: Binghamton
57. SP Carlos Gomez – 19/yrs. old - no, not him. This is starting pitcher who made a name for himself last year for the DSL Mets. Gomez went 7-2, 1.47, in 15-G, 13-St as an 18 year old. We really have no idea how Paul DePodesta is going to move kids like this, but my guess, after he has pitched two years for the VSL/DSL teams, he will come stateside. One caveat: only 46-K in 73.1-IP.
2011: GCL Mets rotation
2012: Brooklyn rotation
58. SP Marcos Camarena – 20/yrs. old - another of the good crop coming out of the 2010 DSL teams. Camarena pitched two years for the DSL team and pitched last season for the GCL Mets, going 3-3, 2.68, in 10-games, 5-starts. He also was short in the strikeout area, with 24-Ks in 43.2-IP. Only 7-BB. He was converted back to a starter at the end of last season and I would normally keep him back at the GCL level to start more; however, he is being pushed by a younger crop of starters out of the DSL system.
2011: Kingsport rotation
2012: Brooklyn rotation
59. RP Ernesto Yanez – 20/yrs. old - you very seldom see a relief pitcher excelling in the DSL, simply because every kid that age with any talent wants to start. That being said, Yanez was the exception in 2010.Another of those control guys that don’t throw strikeouts. 1-2, 3.86, 17-G for the GCL Mets. He needs more work at this level and needs to long toss in extended camp until his arm falls off.
2011: GCL pen
2012: Brooklyn pen
60. RP Roy Merritt – 25/yrs. old - getting back to Mets minor league household names, we come to one of my favorites who I expected would have been in Queens by now. Merritt got us all excited three years and I was there when Omar invited him into the first Mets spring training game in 2009. Roy was on the fast track, and, for whatever reason the “old Mets” management seemed to always decide to screw with a pitchers mechanics. You guessed it… a year of bad road. Rebounded in 2010: 4-5, 3.86 in 60-appearances for B-Mets. This might me his last shot.
2011: Buffalo pen
2012: Queens or bust
