The Mack Report – December 4, 2010

Continuing our prospect slotting…

102. RP Orlando Tovar- 23/yrs. old - He’s a 6-3 lefty out of Venezuela, who started his Mets career in 2006 for the VSL Mets. He’s been slow to develop; however, he posted stellar stats for Kingsport (4-0, 3.43, 13-G, 4-starts) in 2010. Age isn’t as critical a factor for pen pitchers and I expect Tovar to settle into Savannah in 2011. Trust me, teams tend to have a lot of patience for 6-3 lefties.

2011: Savannah pen

2012: Binghamton

103. OF Val Pascucci – 32/yrs. old – No, Pascucci isn’t a prospect, but he may be much more important than that to the Buffalo ownership, He became a big fan favorite last year, as he was in Japan. No, in Japan, he was more like a baseball God. Last year, Pascucci hit 17-HRs in only 190-Abs. The quintessence of AAAA players, he’ll be back in Buffalo for more in 2011.

2011: Buffalo

2012: Out of system

Allan Greene
 104. 1B Jeff Flagg – 25/yrs. old – Flagg was a 2008 draft pick out of college and is far too old to be playing at lower levels. He got off to a terrible start last season for Savannah and was sent back to Brooklyn to get more bag time. It worked and he hit .340 in June. The problem was that this was followed by .275 in July, .202 in August, and .158 in September. I’m not sure if Jeff is going to survive spring training. It may depend upon if Sam Honeck returns intact from a horrific sliding injury last season. For now, I place Flagg back in Savannah and Honeck in Brooklyn.

2011: Savannah

2012: Possible out of the system

105. SP Mitch Houck – 24/yrs. old – another college draft pick started way too low in the system. Now, you have a 24-year old fighting it out for a rotation spot in A-ball. Houck was a reliever for the first two years as a Met, but just didn’t get enough appearances. He was converted to a starter in 2010 for Brooklyn and, at times, was considered the ace of the staff. Still, only ten games, nine starts with a 4-1, 3.73 record. He’s going to have to improve his K-IP ration to stay in the system.

2011: Savannah 6th starter

2012: St. Lucie

106. RP Michael Hebert – 20/yrs. old – Hebert has been behind the 8-ball ever since he was drafted in the 7th round in the 2008 draft. He was a closer out of high school and began in the GCL pen, until he was suspended for a controversial curfew violation, by the infamous “Tony B.”. He started a conversion to a starter in 2009 and had a shaky season (3-7, 4.47, in 11-starts)for Kingsport in 2010. He should at least be in Savannah by 2011, but there’s six starters ahead of him there. He’s still young, so I’m sending him to Brooklyn. Fastball has hit 96.

2011: Brooklyn

2013: St. Lucie
