Savannah Sand Gnats (39-29, 1st, Southern) @ Greenville Drive (37-32, 2nd, Southern)

Game #69 - Road Game #34 - Sunday – 4:05 RHP Gonzalez Germen (5-2, 3.34) vs. RHP Brandon Workman (2-4, 4.10) Fluor Field, Greenville, SC Radio: News/Talk 630 WBMQ & sandgnats.com

Tonight: The First-Half Champion Gnats, SAL affiliate of the New York Mets, finish the first half in Greenville, against the second-place Drive, SAL affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The Gnats have lost three games in a row. After today's game, the Gnats take a three-day break for the SAL All-Star Break and return to action to begin the second half by hosting the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday, June 23.

Last Night: The Drive used a pair of home runs in their five-run fourth inning to beat the Gnats 5-4 to take the first three games of the teams’ four-game series.

Now Pitching: RHP Gonzalez Germen is scheduled to make his 14th appearance and his 12th start today. He is 11th in the South Atlantic League with 67 strikeouts. Germen held Rome to one run on six hits in seven innings in his last start, a 2-1 Gnats’ win that clinched the first-half title. Germen has been durable, going five innings or more in each of his last nine starts and 6 innings or more in seven of those nine. Germen’s 70 innings pitched are third on the Gnats behind Greg Peavey (78) and Ryan Fraser (72).

Germen spent most of the 2010 season with Kingsport in the Appalachian League where he was 2-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 61 innings over 10 starts with 54 strikeouts and 11 walks. He made two starts with Savannah to finish out the year. On August 27th, in his Savannah debut, in game two of a double-header against Charleston, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and a shutout into the seventh. The Gnats are 6-5 when Germen starts and have supported him with 4.40 runs per game (46 runs/11 starts), the second-best run support of any Savannah starter.

Terrific Tovar: Wilfredo Tovar has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games going 24-60 (.400) with four doubles, a triple, three walks, five strikeouts and four RBI in that span.

Zo Good: After two hits last night, 2B/LF Alonzo Harris is hitting .350 (7 H/20 AB) in the month of June. His .350 batting average during the month is second on the Gnats behind Tovar’s .404 (23-for-57).

Three Down: The Gnats have lost three games in a row for the first time since April 22-29, when the team lost seven in a row. Before this weekend, the last time that the Gnats had lost consecutive games was May 19-20.

Missed Opportunities: After going 3-15 with runners in scoring position last night, the Gnats are now 5-for-29 (.172) in the series against Greenville. For the year, the Gnats are hitting .217/.291/.326 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with runners in scoring position.

All-Star Update: Cory Vaughn, who was named to the SAL All-Star team as a reserve outfielder, was named the Southern Division’s starting centerfielder Friday, because Charleston’s Slade Heathcott, who was elected as the starter, will not play in the game due to injury. Robbie Shields and Josh Edgin, who were both named to the SAL All-Star game will not play because both were promoted to advanced-a St. Lucie on Wednesday after the Gnats clinched the first-half title. The Gnats will send six representatives to the All-Star game, June 21 in Salisbury, MD: Vaughn, manager Ryan Ellis, coach Jose Carreno, RHP Taylor Whitenton, LHP Chase Huchingson and RHP Greg Peavey.

Strong Arms: The Gnats have the SAL’s best ERA (3.14), 47 hundredths of a run better than second-place Lakewood (3.61). The Gnats have the second-best WHIP (1.21) in the SAL, and have allowed the third-fewest hits (540) in the League.

Vs. Greenville: The Gnats are 6-5 against the Drive this year, 6-2 at home and 0-3 on the road. After this weekend, Gnats and Drive next play each other during consecutive weekends in August.
