Binghamton 10, Reading 1

Brandon Moore fired six, scoreless innings and Juan Lagares mashed five hits to lead the Binghamton Mets to a convincing 10-1 win over Reading Sunday night at First Energy Stadium. Moore retired 16 consecutive hitters at one point to earn his eighth win. Lagares became the first B-Mets’ hitter to rip five hits in a game since Kirk Nieuwenhuis accomplished the feat April 20, 2010 at Portland.



Binghamton (41-61) grabbed the upper hand for good with a four spot in the first inning. Jordany Valdespin clobbered the first pitch of the game from J.C. Ramirez over the right field wall for his 14th homer of the season. Lagares came next and reached on a bloop double to center. Reese Havens drove him in promptly with a single to center. Ramirez’s troubles continued when he allowed a fourth straight man to reach by walking Allan Dykstra. Raul Reyes drove a third run in with a groundout to first and Eric Campbell put the finishing touch on the inning with an RBI single to right.

Moore allowed a one out single to Fidel Hernandez in the first inning, but settled in from there and retired the next 16 hitters before Michael Spidale roped a double with two outs in the sixth.



The B-Mets were back at it in the fifth inning. Ramirez allowed a leadoff single to Lagares, who stole second base shortly thereafter. With one out, he walked Dykstra for a third time and threw a wild pitch to move the runners into scoring position. Brahiam Maldonado plated Lagares with a sacrifice fly to center and Reyes drove home Dykstra with a single to right-center, making it 6-0.



Ramirez departed to the loss after five innings. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits to take his league-leading 10th loss.

Maldonado increased the lead to eight in the seventh inning against Derrick Loop. The southpaw hung a breaking ball to the slugging outfielder, which he deposited into the seats in left field for a two-run homer, his 18th of the year.



Loop ran into trouble again in the eighth. Campbell led off with a double off the left field wall. Kai Gronauer chased him home with an RBI single to center. Three batters later, Lagares wrapped up his five-hit night with an RBI triple to center to push the lead to 10.



Reading (53-48) scored its only run in the ninth off John Lujan. With two outs, Terry Evans broke up the shutout with a solo homer to left.



Campbell was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI to up his hitting streak to a season-best nine games. Maldonado also increased his hitting streak to five games with a pair of hits and three RBI.



The B-Mets went 3-4 in their seven-game road trip and return to NYSEG Stadium Monday night at 6:35 PM to open a three-game set against the Portland Sea Dogs. LHP Robert Carson (2-8, 4.60) will start opposite RHP Brock Huntzinger (5-7, 6.84). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
