B-Mets Pre-Game Notes

LAST GAME: Collin McHugh and Jack Egbert teamed up to limit the Harrisburg Senators to five hits in Binghamton’s 5-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Metro Bank Park. The victory notched Binghamton’s fourth split series of the year. The Senators jumped out to an early lead on Chris Rahl’s RBI triple in the first inning. Binghamton answered back and took the lead for good in the third on Mike Fisher’s two-run triple. The first of three triples on the day for the B-Mets. Jordany Valdespin doubled the Binghamton lead with a two-run three-bagger in the fifth. The shortstop came home later in the inning on Juan Lagares’ single. Meanwhile, McHugh allowed just one run on three hits over five innings for his fourth win. Jack Egbert took over in the sixth and tossed fourth innings of one-run ball to earn his sec-ond save of the year with the B-Mets.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Jeurys Familia makes his 10th start of the season and first since July 9. Familia was placed on the Disabled List on July 14 with a right shoulder impingement. He missed four scheduled starts and was rein-stated before tonight’s game. Familia earned the win in his last start over three weeks ago against the New Britain Rock Cats, striking out seven in 5.1 innings. The righty took a no-decision in his only start against the Curve on May 27.

RHP Phil Irwin will make his eighth start with the Curve and first against the B-Mets. Irwin started the year with the Bradenton Marauders (PIT: High-A) and went 5-0 with a 2.03 ERA in the Florida State League before being promoted in mid-June. He picked up the win in his last start, holding the Reading Phillies to just two runs on three hits over 6.2 innings on July 27. The Tennessee native was selected by the Pirates in the 21st round of the 2009 draft out of the University of Mississippi.

TRIO OF TRIPLES: The B-Mets set a season-high by slugging three triples against the Senators on Sunday afternoon. Raul Reyes tied the team-lead with his fourth of the year, Jordany Valdespin stroked his third, and Mike Fisher added his second.

HITS KEEP ON COMING: B-Mets shortstop Jordany Valdespin extended his hitting streak to nine games with his triple on Sunday. It is the second time Valdespin has hit safely in nine games this season (5/1-9). He is hitting .308 (12-39) over this streak with exactly one hit in each of his last six games.

STAYING HOT: In nine games with the B-Mets, Juan Lagares has already amassed four multiple-hit games. He went 3-for-4 on Sunday and kicked his average to .410. Since the day of his promotion on July 23, Lagares is second in the Eastern League with 16 hits (Joe Benson, NBR, 17).
