The Mets currently have 32 players on the 40 man roster so they are able to protect up to 8 of their eligible prospects minus any selections they may want to make. In my opinion i would think Alderson would like to keep at least 1 or 2 slots open to try to pluck some bullpen help from other teams AAA squads.
With that in mind I'd protect Captain Kirk, Familia, Lagares, Havens, Puello, Carson, and Flores. The reason i protect Puello and Flores is because we have already seen that some teams are willing to dig as deep as into the Single A teams to pluck good potential prospects (Washington Nationals selection of C Jesus Flores being the prime example).
The reason i leave Marte unprotected is because we have Aderlin Rodriguez right behind him and even if Marte has a break-out year he is still blocked by Wright at 3B and Davis at 1B. I also leave McHugh unprotected because he's basically the same pitcher as Schwinden and Gee. They are "dime a dozen" guys that can be found every year.

I don't know how realistic it is that a team could keep Flores and Puello on their roster all season. Flores can't even play any positions passably. Jesus Flores was a catcher, which I would think would be a little easier to hold onto. Are they going to be so good later on, that a team will absorb them for an entire season just to get the benefits later? I'd actually really like to know. I also would hate to see Holt get picked, despite his poor history. I was hoping with an entire season in the pen, he's possibly become a great future weapon for the Mets. The good news is that rule 5 picks don't stick to often.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with putting A players on your 40-man is that to get them off you have to DFA them and others can then sign them without using up one of their active roster spots (i.e you may be more likely to lose them near to mid term). J.Flores was an exception and Omar KNEW Manny Acta coveted him.
ReplyDeleteAny updates on injured Mets minor leaguers? In particular how are Sean Ratliff, Kirk Neuwenhuis, Jenry Mejia and Brant Rustich doing? Any word on Steve Matx? Finally where does a guy Zach Dotson stand after losing basically a year because of being banned for 50 games and then pitching ineffectively at the very end of the season? I know he is lefty and got a nice overslot signing bonus so just curious what the new regime thinks of him. Thanks for the response.
ReplyDeleteWay to go Chris, perfect picks...now, who gets drafted from the system when the draft happens?
ReplyDeleteRatliff: no word after the second operation - no news is usually bad news
ReplyDeleteKirk - also, no news
Mejia - light tossing - June ETA
Rustich - 100% - coming to ST ready for one more shot
Matz - ready for pitchers/catchers...
Dotson - fell off the face of the earth
