I looked up to find out how many games Zach Lutz has played professionally at first base. It’s 28. He also played three games at second and 208 as a third baseman. I don’t think 28 games constitute a situation in which someone gets a chance to play a position for a major league baseball team in a regular season game. I’m not sure 28 games qualifies one to play in a choose-up slow pitch softball game in the schoolyard at P.S 62.  IMO, this move was so Jerry.

I will be entering my Ralph Kiner stage of participation here on Mack’s Mets, effective May 1^st. I will continue to post the press releases I receive from the various minor league teams for your perusal; however, I will limit my original material to a daily recap of the minor league games and another about draft prospects. The other writers here will add their expertise and comments about the Mets, in general, and  Queens, in particular.

Remind me again why the Mets didn’t go after P Gio Gonzalez?

CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis went into Saturday’s game ranked 13^th in NL-BA, 12^th in OBP, and 13^th in OPS.

AA-Binghamton:   

RP Elvin Ramirez through 7-Appearances – 0.00, 0.71, 11.1-IP, 16-K 

We talked yesterday about how great the 20-year old Wilmer Flores is doing at A+. How about the 20-yr. old 3B Jefry Marte at AA?  Marte is 5^th in the league in BA (.375), Even more important…  not a single error all season at third base. 

IF Josh Rodriguez was named the Eastern League Player of the Week. Stats for the week: .500/.581/.808, 7 G, 13-for-26, 2 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 5 BB, 3 K, 2 SB. It looks like the least the Mets have here is a wonderful 27-year old potential AAAA player. He’s played professionally: SS-327, 2B-155, 3B-17, LF-15, CF-4, RF-2… and is rates midrange in all tools categories. Pop was huge in 2007 (A+, 20-HR, 82-RBI) but disappeared as fast as it appeared. Only five of his 23-hits in 2012 were for extra bases.

Observation:  Because of promotions, there are no “prospects” in the full season teams playing either 2B or SS. Danny Muno would be the closest to one, followed by defensive star Wilfredo Tovar. Yes, Phillip Evans looks like the real deal and J.C. Gamboa show promise, but just by not earning a slot on one of the top four teams shows there is much to be learned, and taught here.

And Reese Havens?  Who the heck knows with this knucklehead (may have to DFA his and let the Astros pick him up to get him going)?
