Players that should be on the Mets Draft Board Week 1
I know it's only May 3, but why not force the Mets to look at a few intriguing prospects in this year's draft in hopes to replenish our farm system.
Targets
RHP Max Fried- There is no doubt Fried is the top left handed high school pitcher in this draft. This kid has a ton of projectability, and really will be shaped by whatever team drafts him. There will always be the hopes to turn Fried into the next Clayton Kershaw, but he has a good chance to be a good MLB pitcher one day.
SS Carlos Correa- Every year, I have a favorite player in the draft, and Correa is the one this year. With the obvious departure of Jose Reyes, and the lack of middle infield depth in the Mets farm system. Correa is a perfect fit, provided he lasts. He has plus power, a great bat, and a good chance to stay at shortstop. The sky is the limit for this kid.
OF Albert Almora- Almora is a New York type of guy. As the poster child of USA Baseball, Almora is used to being "Derek Jeter" if you will. He is a toolsy outfielder with the ability to do a little bit of everything. With his hard work ethic, and above average power, speed, arm, and defense, this is a solid pick by anyone in the draft.
C Stryker Trahan- This is a big boy. If you want a catcher with plus power, Trahan is your guy. His muscular body seems strong enough to endure catching long term, and he is one of the better high school catchers we've seen in the last five years. Maybe it is about time the Mets select their backstop of the future, with all respect to Josh Thole.
Next week, we will have a whole new list. Feel free to make suggestions and they will be seen in the Mets draft board. All comments are welcome!
Good list.
ReplyDeleteThe consensus of opinion is that Correa will probably go 6 or 7... the experts say he's hands down a future star.
Fried may be available at 12 and I'd love him to be picked.
I'm no longer high on Stryker. I've done my research and he just doesn't project out as a decent defensive catcher. The Mets already have a decent hitting catcher with questionable defensive skills.
But, why do I think the Mets are going to pull another Nimmo and call out some name we all go scurring to figure out who the heck this guy is...?
Pitching pitching and pitching...the Mets should grab a high-ceiling arm that falls to them.

ReplyDeleteyou are correct, sir...
you simply can't have enough pitching and there should be a couple of good ones (Fried, Wacha, Cherry, McCullers, etc.) available at #12...
Mack - my apologies, it's Mike Scannell...I've been posting anon recently b/c I can't sign into my google acct from my new smart phone...Of course I hope Gio falls to the Mets but I know there's a snowball's chance in hell...short of that I'm hoping for McCullers.
Deletethat smart phone doesn't sound very smart :)
DeleteMcCullers should be available at 12... I never could get anyone to tell me why he fell so much in the mocks... was he just ranked too high a year ago?
I just can't help and feel that Sandy will throw us another curveball here...
It might be me that's not so smart lol.
ReplyDeleteIt's weird with McCullers, I thought he was being talked about as potential #1 overall last summer. He seems to have high velocity and decent control and was talked about as an SP1....maybe he profiles better as a reliever?
It could be his secondary pitches. If he drops so much (I didn't see him in that mock you posted) maybe the Mets could steal him at #35? Regardless, I wouldn't be upset if they took a chance on him and tried to develop his other pitches. Maybe taking him would be a curve all given how his stock had fallen.
he was the number one overall in all the mocks... and, I can't find anyone knocking him either... weird
