3-6-13 – Ike Davis, Jenrry Mejia, Marlon Byrd

“I got a text from David (Wright)  Joe Torre asked about me. I’m glad they thought of me, but I didn’t make the team. I’d get some at-bats, but not as many (if he had a regular spring training. The games would be more intense. That would be a good way to jump start the season.”
As I have said before, I want the Mets players to stay in camp and work out with each other rather than be on some travelling all-star team. I’m sure David feels different, but this team needs as many starters in place right now.

Confirming report that Jenrry Mejia was sent to NY for concerns related to a thyroid issue. The Mets' initial thinking is Mejia will have to be shut down for about 10 days, but that is pending what the doctors say, of course.

Okay, this is much more serious than some sore wing. At this point the Mets should scratch any spring training plans for the kid and just let him rehab at his own speed. Then “send him” to St. Lucie for a couple of rehab games and then on to Las Vegas.

I’d rotate him SP2 behind Zack Wheeler.

Terry Collins' lineup for Wednesday’s exhibition against Team Venezuela has Marlon Byrd in center field and Mike Baxter in right field. Collins said Wednesday morning he just wants to take a look and that he's a long way from making decisions, but it seems entirely plausible. Thirty-nine of Byrd's 40 starts last season with the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox came in center field.

Think you’re starting to see the formation of the 2013 Mets outfielder. Byrd has played a little sloppy out in right field this spring but it be due to rust and unfamiliarity with the position. Placing him in center with Lucas Duda in left basically sets up the left-right hand hitter you want in the outfielder. Now, all you have to do is figure out the three other guys you’ll keep around to platoon in right and mop up. One will be the fan favorite Cowgill and it looks like Valdespin might be winning one of the other slots.

We could do a lot worse than Byrd.
