Draft 13 – Joey Wagman, Jonathan Gray, Marco Gonzalez, C.K. Irby, Phillip Ervin

Draft 13 – Joey Wagman, Jonathan Gray, Marco Gonzalez, C.K. Irby, Phillip Ervin

I love over-producing seniors, They are cheap, you can draft them in later rounds and they can turn out to be a steal. Remember the name of #26 Cal Poly (16-4, 0-0) 6-0 converter reliever, RHP Joey Wagner who threw up: 7.0-IP, 0-ER, 11-K against UC Santa Barbara Thursday night. Wagnr’s year stat line is now: 6-ST, 5-1, 2.70, 40.0-IP, 53-K, 14-BB, .183 b/ave. Only down side is lack of height.

Nothing seems to be able to derail #18 Oklahoma (21-4, 2-0) junior RHP Jonathan Gray. He gives up two runs (one earned) on Friday and people write he had a ‘bad outing’. One of the reasons might be his yearly stats so far: 6-starts, 4-1, 1.41, 44.2-IP, 51-K, 9-BB. BLF already has him as the #2 prospect in the nation, ahead of Indiana State (9-7, 1-0) LHP Sean Manaea. Gray wasn’t even on the mock may when all this started in July which proves we know nothing the day after the last draft.

There was another strong start on Friday from Gonzaga (14-6, 3-1) against San Diego (14-8, 3-1) from LHP Marco Gonzalez. Thursday stat line was 7.0-IP, 1-R, 5-H, 9-K, 3-BB and, now for the year, 6-starts, 3-1, 2.14, 42.0-IP, 39-K, 7-BB, .227/b-ave. We’re always talking about the big lefties in this draft and for some reason we keep forgetting about Gonzalez who would be quite the pick late in the first round.

Talk about big time pitching performances, Samford (14-10, 4-4) RHSP C.K. Irby threw up a complete game gem against Furman (15-8, 5-6) on Thursday. Stat line: 9.0-IP, 1-R, 3-H, 16-K… yup, 16 strike outs. 6-starts, 4-2, 3.89, 39.1-IP, 46-K, 11-BB. Did I tell you he’s also hitting .375?

Speaking of Samford, OF Phillip Ervin continues to project himself as one of the top outfielders in the upcoming draft. Thursday night, he went 4-4, 3-runs scored, one walk, and one run batted in. His seasonal stats are impressive: .405/.523/.786, 8-HR, 20-RBI, 6-2B, 84-AB, 15-K, 20-BB.
