Binghamton Mets 2013 Game Notes

LAST GAME: The B-Mets were held hitless through 6.2 innings, and finished the game with four hits in a 7-4 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs. Portland struck first in the top of the second inning against B-Met starter Luis Mateo, as Alberto Rosario  hit an RBI single to score Peter Hissey. In the third, Portland took a 3-0 lead when Tony Thomas hit a two-run home run to right-centerfield. In his Double-A debut, Mateo’s night ended after throwing just three pitches in the fourth inning. With a 3-0 count to Rosario, Mateo was removed from the game with an apparent injury. He finished his night giving up four runs on six hits. LHP Shawn Teufel came in for relief, and made his B-Mets debut. He gave up one run in the fourth on an RBI single byMichael Almanzar, but came back to throw a scoreless fifth. John Church came in next and threw a scoreless sixth and seventh, his best outing so far this season. After the B-Mets were held hitless through 6.2 innings, before Juan Centeno knocked a two-run double to the right field wall to make it a 4-2 game. In the ninth, Portland tacked on three more runs on four hits against Chase Huchingson. Binghamton showed life in the ninth, scoring twice on RBI doubles from Rhyne Hughes and Cesar Puello, but they could not complete the comeback.


BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER:  RHP Logan Verrett will make his third start of the season for the B-Mets. In his last start, he went seven innings, the longest of any Binghamton starter this year, and gave up one run on seven hits. He received a no-decision in an eventual 3-1 loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Verrett gave up his lone run in his final inning on a solo home run. In his first start, he won against the Akron Aeros, tossing six inning while giving up three earned runs on four hits. He has given up one home run in each start.


PORTLAND STARTING PITCHER: LHP Drake Britton makes his third start of the season, his 19th career start for the Portland Sea Dogs. In 2013, he has a 1-1 record with a 4.00 ERA in nine innings. After struggling through his first start, he got the with over Reading last time out on 4/10. He threw six innings, and gave up one run on four hits. In 2012, he spent the entire season in Portland, finished with a 4-7 record and a 3.72 ERA in 16 starts. Britton was drafted by the Red Sox in the 23rd round of the 2007 draft out of Tomball HS.


FOLLOWING A LOSS: So far this season, the B-Mets are 3-1 in games following a loss. In this home stand, Binghamton have alternated wins and losses (2-3.)


DEFENSIVE MISTAKES: This season, the B-Mets have committed 11 errors in the field, which is the second fewest in the league. Four of them however, have them have come in the last three games


TEUFEL’S DEBUT: Shortly after being called up from Extended Spring Training, LHP Shawn Teufel took the mound in a B-Met uniform. In his Binghamton debut, he threw two innings, and gave up no runs on two hits. His father, Tim Teufel, was the B-Met’s manager back in 2010, and is currently the New York Met’s third base coach.


TOVAR UP TO THE TASK: B-Met infielder Wilfredo Tovaris the only player on the team to start in every game this season. Each day, he has been slotted as the ninth hitter in the batting order. Tovar has played 10 games at shortstop, and one game at second base.


STRIKEOUT STRUGGLES: Last night, Portland pitching struck out the B-Mets 12 times, a season high for Binghamton. In five of the last eight games, the B-Mets have struck out at least 10 times. Rhyne Hughes has struck out a team-leading 16 times, 10 during this home stand.


NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Binghamton closes out their seven-game home stand Tuesday night against the Portland Sea Dogs. The starting pitching matchup is scheduled to be RHP Jacob DeGrom (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Brandon Workman (2-0, 4.91). First pitch is set for 6:35 PM.
