Keith Law - I was way off on him. Saw him in AFL,
he looked bad - slow across the board, not that athletic, struggling with pitch
recognition - but perhaps he was just fatigued from the long season. My error
for downgrading him so much off that look. He's much better than I thought.
SP Domingo Tapia comes off the DL to pitch tonight for
St. Lucie… SP Hansel Robles went on the DL with
a right shoulder strain… P Marcos Camarena came
off Lucy’s DL and sent to Savannah and the Sand Gnats’ SP Rainy Lara sent to St. Lucie.
There seems to be a
problem developing with SP Noah Syndergaard. Put
simply, he can’t hold runners. He gave up four stolen bases last outing which
is making it very difficult to keep his ERA down and allow his team to keep a
lead. All reports are that he’s a great pitcher but he just has too slow of a
delivery working out of the stance. I’m not sure if the Mets will attempt to
correct this during the season or wait until the winter to work on it.
Remember, changing one area of a pitcher’s game can fuck it all up. We call it
the Brad Holt Syndrome. A portion of this
problem will work itself out when Kevin Plawecki replaces
Cam Maron behind the plate. You might remember
that Maron led the Sally league in least amount of successful throw-outs to
second base. His slow added to Thor’s delivery exasperates the problem. The
Mets are having patience with Maron who is having a bad year after hitting .300
for Savannah last season and being a Sterling winner the year before. He was
blocked by a hot hitting Blake Forsythe, who has tailed off severely in May.
And, having Juan Centeno, Albert Cordero, and
Travis d’Arnaud on the DL can’t help
either. Anyway, back to Thor… we’ll keep an eye on the amount of SBs he
gives up the next couple of outings.

As
of today (Thurs, May 23, 2013) there have been no positive tests in the Majors
and 20 positive tests in the Minors for a total of 1,050 games. At this point
last season, there were two players that had been suspended as part of the MLB
drug testing policy (Guillermo Mota of the Giants and Eliezer Alfonzo, although
he had his 100 game suspension rescinded based on chain of custody that was in
the last CBA). In the Minors, suspensions were more than twice as many by this
date as we’re seeing this year. As of May 18, there had been 42 drug
suspensions in the Minors for a total of 2,100 games.So, is the system working?

The draft is two weeks
away.
I will be issuing my
last mock sometimes in the next week. It will be at least the top 250 players,
probably the top 300. Some last minute thoughts before we start working on the
culmination of a year’s work.

– I am never even close about this process. The best I ever predicted was four
of the actual top ten picks to the actual team that chose them and seven of the
top ten somewhere in that ranking.

– I have never quessed the Mets first round draft pick correctly and I’m
quite proud of that. My picks would have built a World Championship by now.
They are what they are without me.

– The college kids are climbing up the projected first round picks. Teams seem
to fall behind the NCAA playoff process and pick a college junior they can
project immediately into their A+ team.

Injuries have set back early guaranteed first round players like Robert
Kaminsky, Austin Wilson, Ryan Boldt, and now, Sean
Manaea. Teams get real conservative when they are about to hand out the
big bucks. They would rather pay it to someone they can fuck up later on in the
process.

Some specific projected guaranteed top 10 picks are RHP Mark Appel, Jonathan Gray, and Kohl Stewart…
catcher Reese McGuire… third baseman Collin Moran and Kris Bryant…
and outfielder Clint Frazier and Austin Meadows. That’s eight locked picks.
6.
Both Frazier and Meadows continue to drop and threaten to be available at the 11th
pick. It would be interesting if they were.

Others continue to climb out of obscurity a month ago: Good examples would be
RHRP Phil Bickford, LHP Matt
Krook, catcher Nick Ciuffo, SS John Paul Crawford, and outfielder Hunter Rentroe

– Players falling off the first day board have been LHP Stephen Gonsalves, and A.J. Puk, RHP Dylan Covey,
Clinton Hollon, and Adam Plutko, SS Chris Rivera, and OF William
Abreu and Tony Kemp.
