LAST GAME: The Trenton Thunder evened the series with a 10-6 win over the B-Mets on Wednesday night. They got ahead right away and didn’t look back against B-Met starter Mark Cohoon. Cohoon allowed three runs to score in each of the first two innings as Binghamton quickly fell into a 6-0 hole. It became 8-0 in the top of the fifth, but the offense came alive in the bottom half. Against Mikey O’Brien, the B-Mets scored six runs in the frame. The scoring was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Cesar Puello (3R HR) and Allan Dykstra (solo). Those were the only runs Binghamton could produce however; Trenton added two more runs in the seventh against Ryan Fraser as O’Brien moved to 4-0 on the season. The loss went to Cohoon, as Binghamton’s three-game winning streak came to a close.

 

BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Cory Mazzoni makes his seventh start of the season for the Binghamton Mets, and his second against the Thunder. His other start came on May 6, where the righty only lasted 3.0 innings and allowed five runs. It was his first start after returning from a 24-game stint on the DL due to right elbow neuritis. Cory’s last start came last Thursday, May 30 v ALT, which was also a 10:35 AM first pitch. He earned a no-decision after giving up four runs on four hits over six innings. He also struck out a season-high nine batters in a game Binghamton would eventually win, 6-4. In three starts at NYSEG Stadium in 2013, Mazzoni is 1-0 with a 4.32 ERA. In 2012 he made two starts against the Thunder; he went 0-1 and allowed four runs in 12.0 innings.

TRENTON STARTING PITCHER: LHP Matt Tracy pitches in his 12th game (11th start) for the Thunder, and his second against Binghamton. He was dominant in his other start against the B-Mets on May 6; the southpaw threw 6.1 scoreless innings and gave up only one base hit. He struck out a season-high nine batters and earned the win. Tracy has gotten a no-decision in each of his last three outings; most recently on May 31 @ Harrisburg he threw 5.1 innings and gave up one unearned run. He has struggled on the road this season; in seven starts away from ARM & HAMMER PARK, Tracy is 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA. He was drafted by the Yankees in the 24th round of the 2011 draft out of the University of Mississippi.

BASEBALL IN EDUCATION DAY: Thursday marks the third 10:35 AM start time for the B-Mets this season. Each of the last two Thursdays have been these type of games, with the last one coming at NYSEG Stadium. It is the third and final 10:35 AM start time on the schedule for the B-Mets.
MISSED OPPORTUNITIES: Binghamton left nine men on base in Wednesday’s loss. They stranded the bases loaded in both the fourth and the seventh inning.

LACK OF STRIKEOUTS: On Wednesday, the B-Mets struck out five batters in the 10-6 loss. That is the fewest K’s in a game for Binghamton since May 24 against Portland where they struck out only three. The B-Mets have the second most strikeouts as a staff in the league (514).
YET ANOTHER RUBBER MATCH: Binghamton is 4-2 in rubber matches this season. In each of the last two series (v ALT, @ NH) the B-Mets have picked up a win in the final game to pick up the series victory. They have not lost a series since the last time they faced Trenton, losing two-of-three May 6 - 8.
THE STREAK CONTINUES: Josh Rodriguez has hit safely in 20 consecutive games, stretching back to May 13. He is hitting .421 (32-76) during the streak, and has 17 RBI. The streak matches the longest by anyone in the Eastern League since Justin Christian (RIC) had a 21-game hitting streak stretching from August 2010 to April 2011.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets hit the road for a three-game series against the Altoona Curve. First pitch on Friday is set for 7:00 PM, as RHP Logan Verrett will pitch for Binghamton against RHP Ethan Hollingsworth.
