Most guys on a Top Prospect List are ones with lots of hype, pedigree, or even tools oriented future. Then there are guys like Jayce Boyd who force their way on by hitting everything that gets thrown at them.
After signing immediately after getting drafted, Boyd had a rough 1st year playing for Brooklyn. Until this year I hadn't even though of him as a true "prospect." Boy was I wrong. Jayce tore up the South Atlantic League which forced the Mets to give him a mid-season promotion to St. Lucie where you would think the pitching would be tougher.
Well, Jayce has responded by hitting .429 in his first week there. He combines an excellent hit tool with good patience and an advanced eye at the plate. One point of serious concern though is his .148 ISO. He won't make it to the majors as a 1B with a lack of power to that magnitude unless he continues to hit above .300 and play excellent defense. We'll keep an eye out to see if hitting away from Grayson Stadium helps him develop some power in Port St. Lucie.
I honestly don't know how to project this guy.
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't come off very athletic, has a screwy throwing motion, isn't very tall and doesn't hit with much pop.
All he does is lead every league he plays in, in BA.
