Soto- Mets Prospect Stock Watch: #6 - #10

Before the season even began, 2013 was always going to be able the development of our top prospects in the minors and setting up for future seasons. With that in mind lets take a look at our Mack's Mets Pre-Season Top 25 Rankings and see how our guys are doing.

#11 through #15 is here.
#16 through #20 is here.
#21 through #25 is Here.
(States as of 6/5/2013)

#10- SS Gavin Cecchini
Extended Spring Training
No Games Played
Stock- Not Applicable

Like Vicente Lupo, Cecchini has been working out at the organization's Extended Spring Training complex in anticipation of gaining a spot on one of the short season teams. He'll most likely start the year with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the NY-Penn League but don't be surprised if he actually earns a spot in Savannah to replace the struggling Phillip Evans who would get moved to 2B.

#9- RHP Luis Mateo
Port St. Lucie (A+)/Binghamton (AA)
4 GP, 1-2 Record, 6.17 ERA, 1.886 WHIP, 12.3 H/9, 4.6 BB/9, 10.0 K/9
Stock- Undetermined

Mateo finished last season with Brooklyn so it made sense to send him to the FSL for 2013. However after 1 start in Port St. Lucie, the organization hastily decided to promote him to make a spot start in Binghamton. Of course in typical Mets fashion, he didn't pitch well and ended up getting hurt and spending a month plus on Binghamton's 7 Day Disabled List. Mateo is off the DL now and is back in Port St. Lucie and is getting a few relief appearances to get him back in pitching form before taking his spot back in the rotation.

#8- RHP Jenrry Mejia
New York 60 Day Disabled List (MLB)
No Games Played
Stock- Kamikaze Nose-Dive

Say hello to the pitching equivalent of Fernando Martinez. Mejia had such great potential at one point but numerous injuries year after year have eaten away at his development time after it was already disrupted when the Omar Minaya regime promoted him from AA to the major league bullpen. The best we could hope for now is for him to get healthy and become a piece of the future bullpen.

#7- OF Brandon Nimmo
Savannah (A)
.314 AVG, .410 OBP, .415 SLG, 1 HR, 16 RBI, 2 SB, 16 BB, 33 K, 1 Error, 1 Assist
Stock- Holding

Nimmo started got off to a hot start with the Sand Gnats before getting hit in the hand with a pitch and then straining a glute during his time off. He's back now and is trying to get his feet back underneath him. Don't read too much into the K:BB ratio either. Nimmo usually sits close to 1:1 but since coming off the DL the rust has shown with 8 K in his first few games back. Last night was the Nimmo you should expect to see (2 for 3, 2 BB, 2 RBI).

#6- RHP Rafael Montero
Binghamton (AA)/Las Vegas (AAA)
11 Starts, 6-4 Record, 2.71 ERA, 0.950 WHIP, 7.2 H/9, 1.4 BB/9, 9.6 K/9
Stock- Top 5 Lock, Possible BA Top 100?

What more can be said about Montero that hasn't already been stated. He's been really good for Binghamton passing the Double AA wall that most prospects hit. On top of that he even made a spot start for Las Vegas and came within 1 out of a CG before Josh Edgin came in and screwed everything up for him. He still needs some more time in Binghamton to develop his breaking pitches but so far the comparisons to Pedro Martinez are looking more and more achievable with each passing start. Expect him to get promoted to Las Vegas permanently in about a week or so once Wheeler is called up to the big league club.
