Gnats and Power Split DoubleDip
Savannah, GA – The Savannah Sand Gnats split a doubleheader with the West Virginia Power Saturday night, dropping the opener 6-3, before coming up with a 6-1 win in game two.
Steven Matz was excellent in game two for Savannah, shutting out the Power for five innings. He struck out seven and walked two while lowering his ERA to 2.59. In the sixth, he bequeathed a runner to reliever Paul Sewald, who allowed him to score. Seward, who entered in a 3-1 game, recorded the final five outs to earn his seventh save of the year.
The Gnats (29-30/72-56) took a 3-0 lead in game two with a three-run fourth inning. After the Power (38-24/75-57) closed within 3-1 with a run in the sixth, Savannah pulled away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. CF Brandon Nimmo completed the game’s scoring by driving a double into the leftfield corner to score two runs. Nimmo was 2-for-5 in the doubleheader with three walks and two strikeouts.
Game one went to extra innings as both teams scored three runs in their second innings, but not could not push across a run until the Power scored three times in the top of the ninth inning for a 6-3 win. C Francisco Diaz drove the go-ahead runs with a two-run triple in the ninth for his first triple of the year. He homered in the second inning for his first homerun of 2013.
In game one, catcher Albert Cordero threw out four baserunners: two on stolen base attempts and two on pickoffs at first.
The Gnats and West Virginia Power complete their four-game series Sunday when RHP Seth Lugo (2-0, 1.42) takes on RHP John Kuchno (8-5, 3.99). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm. Gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 1 pm. The pregame show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com at 1:45 pm.
