New Met - 2B/3B - Dilson Herrera

mets - dilson herrra

Dilson Herrera

Rank: 11th prospect in Bucs chain -  (Preseason: 20) - West Virginia Power (A Full) ETA: 2016  Position: 2B  Age: 19, DOB: 03/03/1994  Bats: R, Throws: R  Height: 5' 10", Weight: 150  Signed: Aug. 20, 2010 – PIT

Scouting Grades* (present/future): Hit: 3/6 | Power: 3/5 | Run: 6/6 | Arm: 5/5 | Field: 5/6 | Overall: 3/6

Some international prospects come to the United States and are, at least initially, overwhelmed. Not so for Herrera, who made his U.S. debut in 2012 and was among the Gulf Coast League leaders in a host of offensive categories. While he's not the biggest guy in the world, he's shown he can really hit and projects to be an above-average hitter in the future, with more power than you'd expect from a guy his size. A well-above-average runner, the Colombian infielder should be able steal bases consistently, and that speed should also help him with his range as he continues to get used to playing second base, having shifted from playing third in the Dominican Summer League in 2011 after signing.

2012 – GCL Pirates           Rookie                  .281/.341/.482/.823, 11-SB, 199-AB, 41-K, 18-BB, 7-HR

2013 – West Virginia       Full-A                    .265/.324/.421/.745, 423-AB, 110-K, 37-BB, 11-HR, 56-RBI

  1. Does anyone in our system stand in this guys way?
Do we have a higher rated 2b prospect?

  2. Absolutely no one stands in his way (unless you count Flores) and no, there is no higher rated 2B prospect in the chain.

Actually, there was no prospect 2B period.

    This is a great deal.

  3. I don't think there is a second baseman better than this kid. Valdespin? I'm not a fan of his contact rate but he can work that out. Defense, pop, stolen base potential will make him an everyday player if he can make more contact. Him and nimmo will progress nicely together.

  4. Gotta think that this pretty much sinks the Phil Evans ship.

  5. Hey Darnell.

Forget Valdespin. He won't be back.

This kid is 19. This looks like a great deal for two guys you had no plans for with one month to go.

The Mets now have this mid-2016 ting going with Herrera, Cecchini, Nimmo, Lawley, Plawecki, King.

    Very interesting.

  6. Phil Ervin? That kids a beast. Can we speculate who the PTBNL may be? Lol. I wish it was Ervin. It's usually some bum

  7. Good work Mack- jumping on this with details.
Like that we are talkin about position players that this team really needs. Mack you mentioned some players above on target for 2016. This offseason we are going to add a few more names to the list after we deal from our pitching depth. I expect Sandy and Co to get going with real moves. They have been too conservative( some justified) and have a feeling they are ready to strike. Mark my words.

  8. I don't think we will see too much pitching getting dealt w. Harvey's injury and 3/5ths of next years potential rotation on innings limits. Unless we sign Garza. No draft pick required. I've mentioned his name for quite some time now.

  9. Ervin is on the DL which should be a deal breaker.

    My guess - Jerry Sands

  10. Dejan Kovacevic ‏@Dejan_Kovacevic - GM Neil Huntington on PTBNL: “New York’s going to get a pretty good second piece. The #Mets did a nice job.”

  11. This is a terrific deal already, and if the second piece has even a shot of contributing at the ML level, it will get better still.

This winter, particularly with the Harvey situation, I expect measured movement. I wouldn't be surprised if it started with signing Byrd to a two year deal. Past that, a trade for EITHER another corner OF or a SS. I think that for now, they'll do what they can without dipping too deep into the young pitching, leaving some powder dry, and on-field options open, for 2015 and beyond.

  14. The pirates GM called the PTBNL an "ouch" prospect, not an "who" prospect.

Guess that means he's another top 15-20 guy in their system? Doubt top 10. Any guesses?
