  1. it is very revealing when you see a list like this - revealing that being a GM is a tough job. lots of choices you listed, rule out the expensive ones, and there are still plenty left. A wrong decision could mess up your season (see Sean Marcum circa 2013).

I would go with a filler guy, hope for health from your starters early on, and then be ready to tap into Degrom, Noah, and Montero as soon as financially advantageous. Mets are a long shot in 2014 to contend without Harvey, and what will keep fan interest (and attendance) up is bringing up touted minor leaguers. Nothing worse than a retread like Marcum - I never thought, "wow, he is pitching tonight...cancel all of our other plans, honey." I'll be intrigued to watch Noah, Montero, and DeGrom, though.

  2. Rember we have 2 pitchers if healthy would be in most teams top 10 in Fulmer and Luis Mateo. Hopefully they have a healthy season and Tapia improves his contol.

  3. Tommy -

    All great points.

What the Mets will need is an innings eater. Mejia will not give them that.

  4. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you only need Mejia for 1/2 of a season's worth of innings? Once the Super Two deadline passes and the Mets are thusly encouraged to promote players like Montero and Syndergaard then those pitchers could/would replace Mejia in the rotation if his surgically repaired arm's duct tape is coming loose.

  5. 'On paper' last year Marcum was going to solve things and Harvey would never go down.

The real problem the Mets have is the number of starters they have 'on paper' in Vegas:

    Rafael Montero
    Noah Syndergaard
    Darin Gorski
    Jake deGrom
    Cory Mazzoni
    Logan Verrett
    Mark Cohoon
    Chris Schwinden
    Erik Goeddel
    Giancarlo Alvarado
    Mitch Talbot

  6. I think that DeGrom, Noah, and Montero will all be ready as soon in 2014 as the Mets need them - holding the latter 2 back until perhaps June will be a money decision.

Good to bring up Mateo and Fulmer, but Luis only had his TJ surgery in June or July, so I cannot possibly see him having a Met impact until late 2015. Fulmer missed a lot of time with a few injuries, so I'd say the soonest we'd see him is Super 2 June 2015, Matz maybe also for late 2015, or Super 2 June 2016.

They had to have thought a lot of Mateo to have him, after one just one great start in 2013 in St Lucie, pitch as a fill in starter in early 2013 in AA, when he was only in Bklyn the year before. Some leap. He intrigues me, and I hope this surgery really fixes what ailed him.

  7. The obvious hope is that the Mets pick a veteran who can be traded, along with Colon, for some top prospects this coming season..keep stocking up the farm system.

  8. Mateo has changed his name once and his age two times.

He has intrigued a lot of people.

  9. True on name and age - in fact, I just heard the other day that he and Bartolo Colon were high school classmates (just kidding - I think). His next name change can be "the Pitcher Formerly Known as Luis"
