The Astros released non-roster invitee Cesar Izturis on Monday and told Marwin Gonzalez that he had made the team as their back-up infielder.
Izturis, a veteran with a great glove, served as a mentor to the team’s young shortstops, like Carlos Correa and Jonathan Villar. Keeping him around could have been a boon to Villar, making the decision tough. Teams like the Mets and Phillies could be a fit, as could the Rangers.
