From Bob Gregory -
Mack, I'm with you on picking up Drew or making a trade to
upgrade Shortstop being a necessity right now. I have to point to Alderson's
statement about "being a 90 win team" as the reason he has to make a
move now, not later.
I may not believe that the team currently is a 90 win team.
Others may not believe the Mets can win that many games, But if Alderson
believes it, then he sees this team as fighting for a playoff spot right up
until the end of the season.
If a general manager sees their team as being in that type
of position, I would assume they would realize the importance of every single
game, because losing 2-3 more games or winning 2-3 more games could possibly
make all of the difference in the world with making the playoffs and/or playoff
opponents.
I would imagine this would make the general manager realize
that a team with Drew (or other upgrade through trade) as a starter with Tejada
as a back-up is a much better combination than Tejada as a starter and
Quintanilla as a back-up. This difference could be your 2-3 wins over the
course of a full year.
I just threw out the 2-3 games as being a
"low-ball" number. A number that would be a given, to make my point
that........... once again......... Alderson's words do not match his actions.
I am trying to figure out whether Alderson believes what he
says.... but isnt able to follow through his thoughts to the next logical step
or
If Alderson doesnt believe what he says..... but believes
that Met fans are not smart enought to think through the next logical step and
get upset.
I go back to my comment earlier though.....
if Alderson believes this team is on the edge of playoff
games... (90 wins)
and every game counts....
why are you as a general manager.. .... going to stop ...
when one more player....
at a discounted price (according to what other shortstops
have gotten in the market)....?????
heck ..... the contract at this point shouldn't even be an
issue.... because of:
1) how close 90 games is to playoffs- every additional game
counts sooo much more
2) the discounted price & yrs (if drew)
3) the player could always be traded afterwards (if drew)
4) the new shortstop could be traded for

Bob, you make too much sense for a Mets follower…
As much as you and I love this team…
they don’t have the players to be a 90 win team. 85 maybe if Harvey wasn’t hurt,
but that’s about it.
I still believe that, one opening
day, there will be a new shortstop playing for the Mets. I also belive that
Jake deGrom could be the chip needed to pull off a deal, if he keeps pitching
the way he’s doing in camp now.
As for Drew, that will never be
done until it is done. This is an Obama/Putin thing and we all know which one
is Putin.
Bob, I honestly and truthfully
believe we do not have the full 25-man squad yet in uniform.
Mack,
ReplyDeleteI understand that the team is what it is. I know about all of the rumors/reports etc... regarding plans/finances/strategies...etc...
BUT.... I am interested in how the FAN is being treated.
I hate being treated like a fool. I hate being lied to. These things show a lack of respect and caring.
How do you FEEL about the way fans have been and are being treated by Alderson and the Wilpons?
How do your feelings affect the way you look at the team ownership/general managers leadership going currently and going forward?
Bob -
ReplyDeleteI don't actually think anyone cares about the fans.
And I'm not sure that is a bad thing.
Sandy Alderson's job is to build a winning baseball team with the budget being given to him by the owners.
Under those conditions, and with the economy problems/Bernie Hustle... I think he's done a good job.
What I don't like about him is his attempt at being a stand up comedian and the fact he lets his ego get in his way when he negotiates for players from other teams/agents.
