Curtis Granderson hit a two out single to score Omar
Quintanilla with the winning run , the Mets rally to score 2 runs in the bottom
of the ninth inning off Steve Cishek to beat the Marlins 4-3. The Mets led 2-1
going to the top of the 8th inning when Jared Saltalamacchia and Garrett
Jones hit back to back homers off Gonzalez Germen to take the late inning lead.
In the bottom of the 9th Lucas Duda singled, was sacrificed to 2nd
and with two outs Quintanilla singled to left to score Duda to tie the game.
Then Granderson who is emerging from an early season slump ripped a single
under the glove of Garrett Jones to score Quintanilla with the game winner. The
game started as a pitching duel between Wheeler and Henderson Alvarez. The Mets
got to Alvarez for 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Eric Young singled, stole his 11th
base on the year and scored on David Wrights RBI single. Daniel Murphy batting cleanup
followed with an opposite field double to score Wright all the way from
first. The Marlins did their only damage
against Wheeler in the top of the 5th when Marcell Ozuna’s RBI
Single scored Derek Dietrich with Miami’s first run. Germen pitched a scoreless
7th, but in the 8th he yielded the back to back dingers. Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless top of the
9th he picks up his first major league win. He’s now 1-2. Wheeler,
got out of several jams on the night but was brilliant. He went 6 allowed just
4 hits, the 1 run (earned) he walked 3 and struck out a season high 10. Cishek takes the loss. Wright and Travis d’Arnaud both had a pair of
hits on the night. d’Arnaud passed the Mendoza line and is now batting .213 on
the season. Eric Young has now reached base in 19 consecutive games. The Mets are now 3 games over .500 and stand
at 13-10 on the year. They now pull to an even .500 at home (7-7). Saturday
night is game two of the series. Jenrry Mejia (3-0 1.99) goes for the Mets. Kevin Slowey
(0-0 4.15) goes for the Marlins.
Look, this was a very good game, but it was still played against a team that scored only three runs in the first nine innings, two of which came off of one bad pitch.
ReplyDeleteThe Mets pitching and defense continue to carry this team. They survived the David Wright error in the first and yes, there should be an immediate search for two relief pitchers that could replace both Jeuryrs Familia and Gonzalez Germen.
That being said, this was a classic come from behind walk off win, but it probably is an exception rather than the rule. This easily could have been a 3-2 loss.
Keep working on the strengths. Consider giving Sokolovich a shot and even bringing back the still wild Black.
The bats might be waking up but they still have a long was to go. I’d like to see these games won with a little less electricity.
Oh yeah… BTW… nice job by Wheeler. He really needed this kind of game for the self-confidence a starter needs. What a shame he had to throw 40+ pitches in the first inning.
German has been fine. The guy to replace is Valverde.

ReplyDeleteI agree right down the line......but I like the electricity....let em get to love winning!
Willis - I stand corrected
ReplyDeleteYou are too kind :)
DeleteThat 24 pitch first inning wasn't easy to watch, nor was the two wild pitches and 3 walks, but wheeler and his 10 Ks also looked unhittable throughout the night. I'm happy overall.
ReplyDeleteUnreal 9th........
did I say 40+?
ReplyDeleteI love night time meds
