Jared Saltalamacchia lead off the top of the 10th inning
with a solo homer (4) off Kyle Farnsworth to snap a 6-6 tie. The Marlins hang
on to win on Saturday night 7-6. The Mets got off to an early 5-1 lead. The Mets scored 3 in the bottom of the first
highlighted by a two run homer by Bobby Abreu (1) his first as a Met. Earlier Eric Young Jr. singled, getting on base for the 20th
consecutive game and stole 2nd (13) and came home on a sac fly by
David Wright. In the top of the 2nd
Derek Dietrich’s RBI single got the Marlins on the board. In the 3rd Lucas Duda came through
with a 2 run single to give the Mets the 4 run lead. But Jenrry Mejia had a rare melt down in the top of the
6th inning. Mejia started out
strong tossing 5 scoreless innings while
striking out 6, but in the 6th he gave up 4 hits and 4 runs getting
pulled from the game only retiring 2 batters as 9 Marlins came to the plate.
Mejia was hit hard yielding a 2 run homer to Giancarlo Stanton (7), an RBI
single by Adeiny Hechavarria and
left the game with two outs and two on.
Carlos Torres tried to save the day but on his first pitch gave up a 2
run double by pinch hitter Reed Johnson to give the Marlins a 6-5 lead. In the
bottom of the 6th Travis d’Arnaud walked, took second on a passed
ball and scored on a throwing error by Hechavarria on an Omar Quintanilla
infield single to tie the game at 6. Torres, Jeurys Familia and Scott Rice,
Daisuke Matsuzaka all kept the Marlins at bay through 9 frames. Saltalamacchia
won it in the top of the 10th of Farnsworth, who takes the loss; he
now falls to 0-1. Lefty Mike Dunn threw 2 scoreless innings striking out 4 gets
the win. He’s now 2-3. Steve Cishek, who took the loss on Friday night, picked
up his 5th save. The Mets are now 13-11 on the year and 7-8 at Citi
Field on the season. Sunday the Mets
look to take the series from the Marlins.
