April 2nd 2014 -- Nats 5, Mets 1

Wednesday night in Flushing, Bartolo Colon made his Met debut, but he yielded a pair of 5th inning homers as the Nationals hold on to beat the Mets 5-1. Gio Gonzalez started for the Nationals, and right off the bat the Mets got to him. Juan Legares continued his hot hitting leading off the game for the Mets with a triple to right center. Two batters later David Wright hit a sac fly to Jayson Werth in right and it was 1-0 Mets. Colon held the Nats scoreless until the top of the 4th. Back to back doubles by Werth and Adam LaRoche tied the game at 1. In the top of the 5th Colon yielded solo homers to Ian Desmond and to Gonzalez to make it 3-1. Colon went 6 innings, he allowed 9 hits 3 runs, all earned he walked none and struck out 4 throwing 110 pitches taking the loss he's now 0-1. Gonzalez Germen came in in the top of the 7th and gave up back to back doubles to make it 2nd and 3rd with no out and then tossed a wild pitch to bring home Denard Span from third to make it 4-1. Germen settled down and escaped the rest of the 7th with no damage and took the 8th 1-2-3 striking out 3 in his 2 innings. Kyle Farnsworth made his Met debut in the top of the 9th allowing the final Nationals run on two hits. Gonzalez continues to be a Met killer. He was virtually untouched after the 1st inning going 6 innings allowing just 3 hits 1 run, 1 earned he walked 1 and struck out 6. Gonzalez improves to 1-0. Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard and Craig Stammen shut the Mets down in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. Legares was the hitting star and virtually all the Met offense on the night going 2 for 4 with a double and triple. Lagares has hit for the cycle over the first two games of 2014. Ruben Tejada had the Mets lone other hit. Jayson Werth went 4 for 5 for the Nats who punched out 13 hits. The Mets start the year 0-2. Their bats aren’t making a lot of contact as they have struck out 31 times in the first two games of the season. Thursday afternoon Zach Wheeler makes his 2014 debut in the series finale.
