Gnats Double Up Lakewood



The Savannah Sand Gnats took both games of a doubleheader Friday against the Lakewood BlueClaws, winning game one 4-1 and game two 10-2. Starter Robert Gsellman pitched a gem in the first game, throwing a complete seven innings while striking out seven. Game two saw the Gnats buzz through the Claws for 13 hits including a Stefan Sabol grand slam.

Savannah third baseman Jeff McNeil led the charge tonight, going 5-for-6 with a double, four runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk between both games. The Cal State University, Long Beach stand-out leads the league with 13 extra-base hits and is sporting a slash line of .360/.430/.613.  

Lakewood (5-15) scored just one run during game one by way of an RBI double by right fielder Dylan Cozens. BlueClaws Starter Ranfi Casimiro allowed three earned runs on four hits over five innings while striking out just one batter. Savannah second baseman L.J. Mazzilli also hit his first home run of the season in game one- a two-run shot in the fourth inning.  

Game two of the double header was a make-up of a rain postponed game on Sunday, April 6, in Savannah. The Gnats produced 13 hits in game two including a Stefan Sabol grand slam off of starter Julio Reyes in the first inning. Savannah added five more to the lead in the fourth inning, batting around and scoring on a Colton Plaia RBI double, a passed ball, aJared King two-RBI double, and an RBI single by Sabol. The hard-hitting Stefan Sabol now leads the league with 20 RBIs.    

Gnats starter Miller Diaz was sharp in game two, earning his first win of the season. The righthander threw six innings and whiffed eight batters while giving up two earned runs on just four hits. Reliever Dawrin Frias finished off the blowout, striking out two over his scoreless seventh inning. Frias ranks third in the league among relievers with an impressive 14.40 strikeout-per-nine-innings ratio. The two pitchers above him are teammates Robert Coles (15.12) and Akeel Morris (14.66).
